Compared to a standard car, that is the amount of potential CO2 savings for a typical Paintainer customer just by switching to Superfos’ new recycled container

Thursday 05. February 2009 - Compared to a standard car, that is the amount of potential CO2 savings for a typical Paintainer customer just by switching to Superfos’ new recycled container

Leading packaging manufacturer Superfos has an ongoing focus on reaching a smaller carbon footprint on each and every packaging solution. Lately, the green inventions have expanded and now include several containers made from recycled material. One of them is the award winning Paintainer.

“Based on a 20% reduction in the raw material phase, our carbon calculations show a reduction of 70 grams CO2 on each container. If a customer uses around 500,000 Paintainer containers per year, the carbon savings add up to 35 tons of CO2 – or what a standard car emits going around the world more than 5 times,” says Product Designer Torben Noer.

Reduce, re-use, re-think & recycle
Several years of product innovation have already resulted in weight reduction, optimised pallets and savings on raw material and energy consumption. But Superfos’ sustainability strategy, that involves all parts of the Group, aims to meet the increasing demands for sustainable behaviour in the entire manufacturing supply chain.

“Though packaging accounts for only 10% of a product’s total CO2 emission, it is our ambition to contribute in reaching the European Commission’s goal of a 20% reduction in greenhouse gases before 2020. Therefore, the 4 Rs – reduce, re-use, re-think & recycle – are integrated in our everyday work,” Torben Noer explains and continues:

“Our goal is to be perceived as a sustainable and responsible business partner. Therefore, we constantly work on reducing our own CO2 emissions through production and improve our own business. At the same time, we seek to assist our customers in taking the right sustainable decisions within packaging solutions such as our new solutions based on recycled material. As our calculations show, the carbon savings are truly worth it!”

Groundbreaking CO2 calculator
Superfos has developed a new, professional tool that enables precise calculations of each packaging container’s emission of greenhouse gasses measured in units of CO2 equivalents. The calculator can differentiate between energy systems in each country and different types of waste handling (recycling, incineration or landfill). As part of Superfos’ carbon footprint strategy, the precise calculations enable the company to pick out the best ways to take action in order to reduce the overall CO2 emissions.
