Primera 140 – the new saddle stitching system for the highest level of efficiency

The new Primera 140 – high performance and highly efficient saddle stitcher for the mid-performance range.

Wednesday 11. June 2008 - State-of-the-art engineering, packaged in an attractively-shaped case designed according to the newest ergonomic findings, and with the new Muller Martini color, Laserblue: This is the Primera 140, the "powerhouse" of the new generation of machines for the mid-performance range.

The Primera 140 is a flexible production line, conceived to meet varied requirements, for the highest level of efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The modular design permits optimal adaptation to individual needs, and thanks to its ability to handle a large range of sizes, it also offers the best flexibility in job planning. The sophisticated machine design, based on the newest findings in ergonomics, and the modern control concept make working with the Primera 140 an enjoyable experience. It is very operator-friendly and is quick and easy to set up. Added to that is – thanks to comprehensive control systems – matchless quality of the final product.

An operating concept you’ll love
The operating concept of the Primera 140 was designed to comply to the latest ergonomic guidelines. All operating elements have been positioned, according to findings from a height screen study, at optimal working height and at the best angle of incline. This is good for the health of the operator and allows ease of handling and optimum user-friendliness. Added to that is an intelligent control concept which has a central touchscreen and local operating units on all modules. The generous display offers optimum clarity, and the integrated set-up wizard simplifies changeover with its convenient operator guidance system. The operating keys are portrayed as very clearly arranged pictogram. They are language-neutral and they have the same design on all Muller Martini machines. This is a great advantage in cases where a machine operator must work on various machines. Thanks to the easy to operate guidance of the set-up wizard, the machine can be quickly changed over and achieves a high net output in a very short time.

Since there are local operating units on all modules, the distance to the next unit is reduced to a minimum. All the essential functions, such as the regulation of production speed or the timing ratio, can be individually adjusted on each and every feeder. And here is a special feature: On/off operation and operation during jogging mode are aided by haptic features for better precision adjustments. The operator can feel which key is correct and can make fine adjustments without seeing the screen.

The Primera 140 is equipped, in its highest level of automation in the E version (refer to box), with the automatic set-up system, Amrys (Automatic Make Ready System). With this, feeders, stitching machines, three-knife trimmers and stackers are automatically set to the necessary size. This allows the Primera E140 to achieve the quickest set-up times.

Clarity and accessibility are convincing overall: Attractively shaped plexiglas panels, with their visually calming appearance, allow an optimum view of the process. And the new hood concept, providing rapid access in all machines from stitching machine to three-knife trimmer, ensures optimum handling. Added to that, ergonomically optimally arranged work surfaces with measurement aids provide even more convenience. Some of these surfaces have practical recesses for the slip-free placement of tools.

Feeder concept for best process reliability
Consistent processing of printed products at high speed calls for reliable feeders. The flat pile feeder permits the processing of all signature types, whether with low folio, high folio or without overlap. A reliable signature placement supports the new, ideal signature feeding with a hopper inclined at a 10° angle. Separating air on the side of the head and foot stops additionally ensures reliable separation. The stops can be used to process a broad range of sizes. There is also a hinged stop especially for the processing of small sizes.

The cover and card folder feeder 554 with automatic stack positioning scores and folds single sheets like covers, overwraps or cards in one operation. It can be used at any feeder position and has a high feeder hopper. A new kind of caliper wheel guarantees a uniform scoring depth (both positive and negative scoring possible) and perfect folding quality. The folder feeder can be used at any feeder position and can – as with other feeders too – be easily repositioned. When docking, the feeders are automatically centered, braced with four easily accessible bolts, and immediately recognized by the control system. Due to the sturdy, low-vibration universal bases, the feeders do not need to be re-leveled after moving.

New stitching heads for the fastest job changeover times
The compact stitching machine of the Primera 140 is very clearly arranged and operator friendly with its large plexiglas doors. All control elements are centrally arranged at one location at an ergonomically optimal height. Further great features: easily accessible, integrated tool spaces and a simple signature measurement device at arm height.

The stitching machine of the Primera 140 is equipped with a strong, traveling carriage and continuous double gathering chain. Stitching is done according to the Muller Martini principle of “flying stitching heads” with the new, revolutionary Q stitching heads (quick set-up). Job changeover times can be reduced by a full 50% with these stitching heads. In addition, with the new Q-stitching heads, very fine wire can be processed (instead of 0.55 mm diameter 25 grade wire, now new: 0.45 mm diameter 27 grade wire). This reduces wire consumption by around one third. The result: lower costs and the environment benefits too.

New three-knife trimmer 459 for perfect product quality
Trim quality and excellent process visibility are two impressive features of the newly designed, extremely robust three-knife trimmer 459. The trimming area is easily visible and accessible because of the hinged plexiglas hood. The trimming sequence is: front trim and then head/foot trim. Trimming speed has been increased thanks to optimized trimming dynamics. This leads to perfect trim quality and very long knife life.

The new saddle stitcher Primera 140 stands for best-possible efficiency and cost-effectiveness. And thanks to the modular system design, each and every Primera line can be tailored precisely to the individual needs of the customer. To do this, Muller Martini offers a comprehensive expansion range with various loading and packaging solutions. This makes the Primera 140 unmatched in its performance category – simply the best!
