The Corona C18 with the ZTM 3697: for the highest level of productivity in the upper performance range

The Corona C18 high performance perfect binder boasts an attractive design and very high productivity.

Saturday 07. June 2008 - The tried and tested Corona C18 high performance perfect binder in conjunction with the new ZTM 3697 gathering machine and the Orbit three-knife trimmer: now in a new attractive design, with ergonomic improvements and boasting even higher productivity.

With its demonstrably high efficiency, the Corona C18 is the clear market leader in the upper performance range. It is used for the production of magazines with the most varied inserts, catalogues, telephone directories, paperback books and much more. The unique automation means very short make-ready times and extremely cost-effective production for a broad range of print runs.

The tried and tested full-guard covering has been adapted to reflect the new machine design. It reduces noise emissions and offers the operator ready access to the individual stations. This saves a lot of time, when carrying out a tool change, for example.
The control units are very operator-friendly. As well as the central Commander control system, the Corona C18 has decentralized operating panels which allow machine operators to setup and fine-tune stations more easily because they also have visual access to the corresponding station. The height of the panels complies with ergonomic principles and they are slightly inclined to allow better visibility. The standardized symbols on all the HMIs (Human Machine Interfaces) also make operation easier.

The new ZTM: Well flexed signatures are half-way to perfect binding
The productivity of the perfect binding line has been considerably improved with the new 3697 gathering machine which was presented to the public for the first time at the Muller Martini Open House last fall. With our worldwide unique, patented signature separation, the bottommost signature is peeled off the residual stack parallel to the back – like skin being peeled off a piece of fruit. As it is peeled off the stack, the signature is flexed. This gives it inherent stability. To make sure it is delivered without any damage, the signature is completely enveloped in a cushion of separating air and then held very firmly and securely for conveying lengthwise out of the hopper.
This inherent stability is also important in the concave raceway (which is another innovation from Muller Martini for which the patent is pending). Again, the curved shape gives the signature high stability, allowing it to be transported safely. This is particularly important for single sheets or oblong sizes. Thanks to this innovation, it is possible to run at speeds of up to 18,000 cycles/hour and maintain very high process reliability.

The Orbit three-knife trimmer with improved cutting performance
The robust Orbit three-knife trimmer takes care of the cutting. With the unique level of automation on this three-knife cutter, make-ready times are a maximum of three minutes. All the settings can be optimized as the machine is running, so that the required quality and productivity can be achieved within the shortest time possible. The mechanical output of the Orbit can be increased to 7,200 cycles/hour and it can cut 80 mm thick products cleanly. One reason for this is the revolutionary servo-driven SmartPress technology. It makes for a gentle and controlled pressing process that allows the air between the sheets of paper to escape completely.

The new CB 18 stacker in the Corona line is also a first. It has a higher level of automation than the CB 16, its predecessor model, which has reduced the make-ready times even more.

As a special highlight, Muller Martini will be producing with PUR on the Corona line in Düsseldorf. The sophisticated technology of the VPN book spine nozzle enables production to continue at full machine speed. The visitors to the Muller Martini stand will therefore be witnessing a world premiere: PUR production at 18,000 cycles/hour!

The BDC electronic book data center
Another highlight amongst all the innovations on the perfect binders is the BDC – the Book Data Center. This allows all the relevant book dimensions to be recorded for the units in the line and called up by them.
The electronic book data center is connected to their control systems. After the measuring process, the most important data are directly transferred, therefore eliminating any chance of entering false information. Supplementary product details can be entered directly on the units. The possibility to prepare subsequent jobs on the BDC on the run reduces the effective make-ready times to a minimum.
