The Artemis Transat – Fujifilm yacht – day 13

Monday 26. May 2008 - Fujifilm is currently in 7th position in the Artemis Transat.

Speaking to Alex Bennett earlier, he said: “It’s rough seas and a very bouncy ride. We’ve picked up speed and the boat is taking a pounding but all is going well currently. I have my safety suit on and everything is soaked as the waves are massive. I’m tired but determined.”

Following a problem with the sail yesterday, Alex is considering one of two options to fix it.

He continues: “The main sail ended up in the water yesterday as there is a problem with the clip at the top of the mast which just broke with a loud bang. I managed to get the sail in and it’s stowed below deck at the moment. There are a couple of options to fix it – option 2 is to climb the mast which is just too dangerous to do at the moment. I think once I’m at the ice gate I’ll decide what to do with it.”

The Artemis Transat – Fujifilm yacht – day 13

Monday 26. May 2008 - The mood is good on Fujifilm today and the rough weather and windy conditions have passed. Speaking to Alex earlier, he said: "Getting around the ice gate was a living hell! I've now changed course to the North West towards the finish. We are doing some fast sailing - about 30-35 knots and for the past 4-5 hous, it's been a different type of full on. It's been really exciting."

Fujifilm is now sailing in lighter winds and Alex is taking this opportunity to sort the Genoa sail. He added: ” It’s been rough seas and Fujifilm has really taken a pounding in the past 30 hours. One of the boats in front has had some problems so we were all on alert to get him if it was needed as well.”

Alex is trying to catch on some speed now and is estimating that he may be finishing in about 4-5 days. Tired but positive, he said: “I’m going to give it my best shot and I just hope that I can sort the sail issue as this might be a real struggle. It’s still all to play for.”
