Secure Printing with BlackBerry Smartphones and QR Barcodes

Wednesday 24. November 2010 - ThinPrint .print Personal Printing Essentials for BlackBerry smartphones enables secure printing without investment in smart cards or new printer hardware.

ThinPrint today launches .print Personal Printing Essentials. This new solution enables secure printing with user authentication through BlackBerry smartphones and QR barcodes.

The secure printing solution from ThinPrint works as follows: the user prints the document as usual on his desktop, selecting the ‘Personal Printing’ option. The user can then pick any printer and scan the QR barcode affixed to the printer with his BlackBerry smartphone. When installed on a BlackBerry smartphone, the ThinPrint app ensures that the print job is sent from the server to the required printer. This ensures only an authorized user can collect the print job.

Personal Printing is based on two successful ThinPrint technologies. V-Layer technology decouples printing from specific printer hardware. Therefore the user does not need to know when initiating a print job, from which printer he will eventually collect the print job. Print jobs are safely stored on the server until the user decides to pick up the print job.

The second part of the solution is an app for BlackBerry smartphones that identifies the printer by allowing the users to scan the QR barcode, before initiating the printout through the Personal Printing service. QR barcodes readable by BlackBerry smartphones can be created online.

“Our solution is secure, reduces paper and toner use and ensures that printouts do not fall into the wrong hands,” said Charlotte Künzell, CIO and COO at ThinPrint AG. “In contrast to other secure printing solutions, users can start with Personal Printing Essentials without investing in expensive hardware. All it takes is free QR barcodes, our solution and a BlackBerry smartphone.”

Pilot projects with well-known companies are already underway. .print Personal Printing Essentials supports BlackBerry smartphones running the BlackBerry 6 OS, such as the BlackBerry Bold 9780, BlackBerry Style 9670 and BlackBerry Torch 9800 smartphones. ThinPrint is also planning to support the BlackBerry Bold 9700 smartphone once the update for BlackBerry 6 is available.
