Friday 01. August 2008 - Cooperating with the Environment-Related Program

Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. will introduce its Integrated Recycling System deployed in Japan as well as the Asia-Pacific region, including China, to 75 youngsters (45 from Japan and 30 from overseas) participating in Asian Youth Exchange Program in Okinawa*1 hosted by the Cabinet Office to be held in Okinawa from August 6 to 27, 2008.

Asian Youth Exchange Program in Okinawa is aimed at giving an opportunity to young people from Japan, especially Okinawa, as well as 14 other countries in Asia, notably ASEAN nations, and the Oceania region, of cultivating their innovative spirit, an essential element for creating their bright future, through communal living for a certain period, meeting with top-ranking scientists and witnessing sophisticated technologies. This year marks the first time the event will be staged.

This year’s theme is “Environmental Issues”, with plans of lectures on environmental issues, experience in a natural environment, and introduction of eco-conscious initiatives by companies.

Under Fuji Xerox’s Integrated Recycling System, used copy/multifunction devices are recovered from customers and disassembled, and those parts that satisfy stringent quality standards are introduced into the production line, while those that cannot be reused are separated into different categories and recycled. At Asian Youth Exchange Program in Okinawa, Fuji Xerox plans to explain its environmental philosophy, as well as an outline of the recycling activities, which have been expanded from Japan to overseas, and provide hands-on learning by using parts collected from used copy machines.

Fuji Xerox started operation of the Integrated Recycling System in Japan in December 1995 and expanded it to the Asia-Pacific region, based in Thailand, in December 2004, followed by China in January 2008. With regard to the outcome of the Systems in Japan and the Asia-Pacific region in fiscal 2007, the amount of new resources was slashed by 3,860 tons*2, while also reducing 25,000t-CO2 emissions*2, *3. The total production volume of products incorporating reused parts*4 has topped 300,000 units.

Fuji Xerox continues to promote environmentally friendly business activities contributing to community programs.

The Integrated Recycling System in China started its operation in January this year, so is not included in results for fiscal 2007.
To include the amount of CO2 emitted in the production process of parts, the figure was computed converting the cost saved from not purchasing new parts into the amount of CO2 using inter-industry tables.
Reused parts are incorporated into products only in Japan.
