Griffin Digital wins, plus a high commendation at Galley Club Awards

Friday 18. July 2008 - Awards appropriate swansong to DocuTech; heralds further achievement on new Nuvera installs.

At the recent Galley Club Awards Griffin Digital, a business arm of Griffin Press, won an award for its digitally produced book Rooftops. It also received a High Commendation for innovation in book production for the production of Natural Resources Commission’s annual report, printed digitally on recycled paper.

Both books were printed on the Fuji Xerox DocuTech 6135 – a first generation digital production press. Ben Jolly, Griffin Press’s General Manager says the awards are testament to not only the craftsmanship of the digital print operators, but also to the excellent quality and performance of Xerox presses.

“Winning these awards is particularly gratifying. We were shortlisted for all four nominated books in the digitally produced book category, which is an excellent achievement and a credit to our talented press operators and to the print technology itself,” he said.

The award-winning Rooftops, published by Finlay Lloyd Publishing, proved a particularly challenging print job due to the amount of toner coverage required on each page.

“Rooftops is a cartoon book, with black pages and reversed-out white images printed on a bulky cream paper stock. It was a complex print job: the stock was difficult to work with and achieving the levels of toner coverage required for the black pages was challenging,” said Jolly.

On their High Commendation for Innovation for the annual report, Jolly said: “Recycled paper has to be tested thoroughly for digital printing. Our client was delighted with the results, as were we. It took us down a vital research path sourcing a range of environmentally appropriate stocks. We are adopting a sustainable approach to our print stocks as a result.”

New Fuji Xerox technology installs announced by Griffin Digital
The awards are an appropriate swansong to the DocuTech 6135, installed at Griffin Digital over eight years ago. Expansion has meant Griffin Digital is currently migrating from the Xerox DocuTechs to the Nuvera EA technology. The organisation is newly installing a Nuvera 288 cutsheet monochrome printer with inline continuous feed and binding for fully automated book production; a Nuvera 144, and a DocuColor 260 digital production press for colour covers and book production.

“There has been lots of interest from publishers in the digital book market and excitement in the new technology Griffin Digital is installing, particularly in regards to how accessible our online ordering will make short-run, print on demand books, allowing them to reduce inventory costs,” said Jolly.

“Griffin Press has put a lot of energy into becoming the quality leaders in digital book production. To win the Galley Awards and to be included on every shortlist in our category is testament to our capabilities,” he said.
