St Ives wins Bronze Sappi European Printers of the Year Award

Sappi Bronze Award winning entry for books, 'Noelle Represents', printed by St Ives Westerham

Friday 11. July 2008 - St Ives Westerham Press, the fine art, report and accounts printing division of St Ives plc, has won the bronze award in the 2008 Sappi European Printers of the Year competition for Books Category.

The company won the award for its superior print quality, binding and colour control for ‘Noelle Represents’, a client portfolio for Photographic Agent, Noelle Pickford, showcasing work from nine photographers.

The Sappi European Printers of the Year awards recognise the highest levels of print in Europe and the Middle East. Each year gold, silver and bronze awards are given to printers celebrating print excellence in a range of markets, including annual reports, books, brochures, calendars, catalogues, general print, Magazines, Packaging and Labels and Printer’s Own Promotion.

Emmanuelle Gheysen, Marketing Initiatives and Events Manager, Sappi Europe comments, ‘We were looking for books that were well printed, bound and had something special. ‘Noelle Represents’ printed by St Ives Westerham Press, was a perfect example of high quality book printing, with stunning, vibrant colours and superior colour control – just what we were looking for.’

Peter Hayden, managing director, St Ives Westerham Press, comments, ‘This award contest is recognised as being one of the most technically critical measures of its kind, and is always very difficult to win. We are delighted to have secured the Bronze award, especially when you consider that we were up against 717 entries, from 34 countries throughout Europe.

‘Aimed at creatives and art buyers within the advertising and design markets, Noelle Represents is a promotional book designed to showcase photographers available through agent, Noelle Pickford. Because of this, it was imperative that the book accurately represents the original photography. To us, this meant working hard with the designer and each of the nine photographers to achieve an acceptable print and colour balance to all parties, and in turn, provide a sales tool that would ensure longevity and superior ROI for all involved.’

Published by Em-Project, a multi-disciplinary design studio, the book was finished in March 2007 with a print run of 2,500. Printed in eight page sections to allow maximum production flexibility, each photographer could order additional run-ons to suit their needs.

Peter concludes, ‘Only 36 pieces of work were considered suitable for this award, and as such, I feel very proud of the fact that once again, St Ives Westerham Press has been recognised for its quality offering, hard work, flexibility and the expertise required to produce a book of this kind.’
