St Ives Contributes to Channel 4 Sculpture

St Ives Web, the magazine printing division of St Ives plc donated its printing plates to be used as part of Channel 4’s new Sculpture outside its Head Office in Victoria

Monday 26. May 2008 - On 12th May Channel 4 unveiled its new sculpture outside its Head Office in Victoria. It commissioned El Anatsui, a well renowned artist, to build the sculpture with used printing plates to create a 50 ft high logo entitled 'News'.

St Ives Web, the magazine printing division of St Ives plc, the UK’s largest provider of print and added value services, donated its printing plates to be used as part of the sculpture, along with other certain newspaper printers. All parties were very happy to be a part of the stunning work of art along with all the clients that were able to contribute at the time. These included The British Museum, Art Review, Artrocker, The Tate, The National Art Collectors Fund, Time Out Magazines, The Economist Newspapers, The Financial Times, G E Fabbri, TSL Education, Virgin Vie Cosmetics, Haymarket Publishing, Institute of Directors, Virgin Holidays, Centaur Communications Ltd, CMP Information Ltd, Imagine Publishing, Archant Life Ltd, Panini UK Ltd, Pro-Activ Publications Ltd, Conde Nast Publications Ltd, and Redwood Publishing (M & S Magazine).

The Big 4 was originally unveiled in October 2007 to mark the launch of The Big Art Project, one of the most ambitious arts programme in the Channel’s 25 year history. Previous artists included Nick Knight and Mark Titchner.

El Anatsui gave a talk on the day highlighting his previous work, which always had a running theme of recyclable products. In light of today’s need to enforce environmental changes, it is no doubt that his work reflects this in some way, as well as referencing the ephemeral nature of news formats in our current time.
