FESPA Drives Planet-Friendly Policy with Digital 2008 Event

Friday 20. June 2008 - FESPA Digital Printing Europe, which took place from 1st to 3rd April 2008 at Geneva’s Palexpo exhibition centre, strongly illustrates FESPA’s commitment to environmentally-friendly practices and reducing the carbon footprint of its events.

Geneva Palexpo’s sustainable development programme and environmentally responsible policy played a key role in FESPA’s decision to hold FESPA Digital Printing Europe 2008 at the Swiss exhibition centre.

The electricity used to power Geneva Palexpo, including all exhibitor stands, comprised of 100 per cent hydro-electric power – the most widely used form of renewable energy. Possessing TüV* certification, Palexpo’s electricity is guaranteed to originate from renewable and/or environmentally-friendly sources.

Recycling also played a key part in reducing the environmental impact of the digital event. Exhibitors were encouraged to recycle waste on their booths and, as a result, 80 per cent of the total waste (78 tonnes) collected at FESPA Digital Printing Europe 2008 was recycled. This included 23 tonnes of wood removed from dismantled stands, used to make MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) or block wood panels, and subsequently used by IKEA to produce furniture.

The carpeting was recycled instead of being washed for re-use on future exhibitions. Acknowledging the environmentally negative impact of chemical detergents and unnecessary water usage, Palexpo partners with a Slovenian company to produce pellets from the carpets, which are eventually used to produce clothing.

All visitors were also encouraged to make use of Geneva’s public transport system. A free Geneva Public Transport card was given to all FESPA Digital visitors and exhibitors who stayed at least one night in the city.

Frazer Chesterman, FESPA Managing Director, comments: “One or our key aims is to support members and the wider printing community by providing them with guidance on a number of issues including the environment. With increasing pressure from environmental groups and corporate social responsibility agendas, the printing industry is looking to become more ‘green’ and eco-friendly and print professionals are increasingly looking at environmentally responsible production and to align themselves with businesses that are eco-friendly. When choosing an exhibition centre, the planet-friendly nature and practices of the venue are key criteria for FESPA. This was one of the deciding factors when choosing Geneva Palexpo as the location of FESPA Digital Printing Europe 2008. We are conscious of our carbon footprint and are always trying to make a difference by reducing the environmental impact of our shows as much as possible. We will continue to look for environmentally responsible alternatives and solutions for all our future exhibitions.”
