German Printers Take Two Top Category Awards In Fespa Digital Print Awards 2008

Monday 14. April 2008 - German digital print service providers reaped several rewards in the FESPA Digital Print Awards 2008, supported by HP, including two of the eight coveted Category Prizes.

Hamburg-based large format specialist Erler+Pless (www.erlerundpless.de) scooped the Category Winner prize in the Manufactured Goods category for its entry entitled ‘Lambert Styles’. The project, for E+P client Xounts, involved digitally reproducing a range of exclusive fabric designs onto a fleece fabric to cover striking pyramid-shaped speakers. The speakers form part of the homeware collection of holistic interiors company Lambert.

In the Packaging category, Witzhave-based label production experts Rako Etiketten (www.rako-etiketten.de) took the top prize for their work on the launch of the Schwarzkopf & Henkel got2b haircare products. A challenging brief to print onto a denim-look textile label substrate led Rako Etiketten down the digital production route with their HP Indigo label press, with outstanding and cost-effective results.

Simon Pless of Erler+Pless and Ralph Koopmann of Rako Etiketten celebrated with other Category Winners at an exclusive dinner event in Geneva on 31st March, where they received their prize certificates, respectively, from HP’s Lucien Moons and FESPA board member Lascelle Barrow.

Other German printers whose work was singled out from over 300 entries for commendation by the jury were:

• inrichs Fotofactory (Georgsmarienhuette) for their work on the interior of Hugendubel book shop

• Klenke GmbH (Dortmund), for their exterior decoration of a DEW transformer station

• Wand-Gewand Thomas Staiger (Muenchen) for ‘Fresh Leaves’, a digitally printed decoration of apartment balconies in the city

• Klöckner Pentaplast (Graben-Neudorf) for their entry ‘Decorative Surfaces’ involving digitally printed PVC film onto MDF for kitchen decoration

Commenting on the success of German print service providers in the competition, which invites entries from across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Hellmuth Frey, past FESPA President, FESPA board member and representative of FESPA’s German member association, Bundesverband Druck und Medien (bvdm), said:

“This outcome underlines the high level of education and training of German printers, and shows how digital technology can enable printers to deliver projects that are customer-oriented, innovative and creative. I hope that the success of these German businesses in this year’s competition will inspire other print service providers here to enter their work in the FESPA Digital Print Awards 2009, and to take advantage of this unique opportunity to showcase their most outstanding work to an international audience.”
