Presto E90 saddle stitcher: for efficient production of small to mid-size runs

Presto E90: the highest-performance, most efficient saddle stitcher of its category.

Wednesday 04. June 2008 - With the Presto E90, Muller Martini presents a further development of the proven Presto: with the fresh Muller Martini color, Laserblue, a whole series of technical improvements and the new three-knife trimmer 1565.

The Presto E90 saddle stitcher is based on the proven and successful line of Muller Martini entry-level saddle stitchers. With speeds of up to 9,000 cycles per hour and its high level of automation, the Presto E90 is the most cost-efficient, highest performance saddle stitcher for production of small and mid-sized runs. It belongs to the new generation of machines from Muller Martini which is being presented for the first time at drupa. The letter “E” indicates the highest level of automation of a saddle stitcher.

With the Presto E90, comfort begins with the large, clear and user-friendly 10.5″touchscreen monitor. It has new intelligent controls for easy order entry. The operator can be lead step-by-step through the entire order with the new set-up wizard. This makes the saddle stitcher extremely fast and easy to set up. Set-up time is further reduced because configured order data which is entered once can be saved and recalled again later. Other advantages are, for example, detailed error output for every component, electronic product tracking between stitcher and trimmer, and remote maintenance capability.

The Presto E90 is easily accessible from all sides thanks to the new ergonomic cover with large viewing windows. It can be run with up to six twin feeders (or five twin feeders and one folder feeder) in 1:1 or 1:2 mode. The compact twin feeders have a flat pile hopper with a large capacity. Signatures with high or low folio lap are opened carefully with grippers, and for signatures without fold there is suction opening. And for optimum control, Asir 3 is offered as an optional feature. This optical quality control detects photos and barcodes on the signature. This way, flawed signatures can be ejected unstitched. The compact twin feeder is also available as tiltable model so that merchandise samples or signatures with special sizes can be laid directly onto the chain. Set-up time for the feeders was made faster with a timing help which positions the gathering chain automatically according to size for the feeder.
The stitcher of the Presto E90 is – depending on the size – automatically synchronized with the three-knife trimmer over a shaft. This way, the saddle stitcher and the three-knife trimmer can be set-up and maintained independently of one another. Stitching can be done with up to six traveling stitching heads without stop-and-go movement. This is unmatched in this performance category. The newly developed Q stitching heads (quick set-up) developed for the high-performance range are also unsurpassed. It has been possible to cut job changeover time in half, and thanks to new clinchers made of ceramic they are considerably longer lasting than former models.

The product quality of the Presto E90 is also very convincing. It is ensured by numerous quality controls such as the thickness measurement on the side “SEMKO”, the long book control, the staple control or the automatic signature type recognition Asir III. The benefit: incomplete or flawed copies are rejected unstitched, reducing waste. The Presto E90 also has electronic product tracking, from the gathering chain to trimmer. This improves production reliability.

Three-knife trimmer 1565 for a clean cut
One completely new development is the three-knife trimmer 1565. Its set-up without requiring tools is very impressive. This is taken care of by the automated saddle stitcher timing setting, hand wheels with digital displays and central book thickness adjustment. An ergonomic cover design allows for easy viewing and quick access to the trimmer and infeed. The cutting sequence is front trim followed by head and foot trim. The timing of the yoke can be advanced or retarded on the touchscreen of the saddle stitcher by the operator during production. This improves the machine’s performance and flexibility even more. Other impressive features are quick knife changing and rapid placement of the fourth and fifth knife attachment.
