Friday 14. March 2008 - • For both hot foil embossing and die-cutting applications • Added value thanks to more surface finishing options

At drupa 2008, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) will be unveiling the Varimatrix 105 CSF die-cutter (CSF stands for cutting, stripping, and foil embossing), which can be used for hot foil embossing and as a die-cutter with stripping function. This makes the machine ideal for commercial and packaging printers who are looking to offer their customers a comprehensive service and added value thanks to a wider range of surface finishing options.

Metallic effects and multistage/relief embossing can be applied efficiently in a single pass using the hot foil module of the Varimatrix 105 CSF. The cost-effective technology of the hot foil embosser is highly impressive. It is possible to heat only specific zones, which means that the complete plate does not have to be heated when working with small formats. In addition, a variety of feeds optimizes foil use.

The straightforward touchscreen control of the Varimatrix 105 CSF also enables cost-effective embossing and metallic surface finishes for short and very short runs. A frame-changing system results in quick and ergonomic job changes. New hot foils or die-cutting jobs can be prepared on the optional frame-changing table while the current job is being die-cut or embossed in the machine. Thanks to the ergonomic design, a single operator can pull the large hot honeycomb plates straight out of the machine onto the frame-changing table.

The Varimatrix 105 CSF can be equipped with a mechanical rewinder or a brush system to remove the used foil. The rewinder can be used to wind the foils on six independent shafts in a dedicated module. Optical control elements in the brush system prevent tears in the thin foil by ensuring stable foil tension. The brush system removes used foil from the side of the machine, where it can be collected and disposed of.

The Varimatrix 105 CSF is highly flexible and can process a wide range of different substrates – from paper of 80 gsm and above to card and solid board of up to 1,400 gsm and corrugated board up to a thickness of 2 mm (0.08 in) for hot foil embossing. It can also die-cut and strip corrugated board up to 4 mm (0.16 in) thick. The key features of the Varimatrix 105 CSF include its excellent quality and efficient workflows. The maximum processing speeds are 6,000 sheets per hour for hot foil embossing and 7,500 sheets per hour for die-cutting and stripping. Sheet formats ranging from a minimum of 350 x 400 mm (13.78 x 15.75 in) to a maximum of 750 x 1,050 mm (29.53 x 41.34 in) can be processed.
