Heidelberg introduces additional options for the Eurobind 4000 adhesive binder

A high degree of automation enables the Eurobind 4000 adhesive binder to achieve the highest net output of any machine in its class – up to 95 percent. The performance of the machine is being raised even further for drupa 2008 with the addition of new options.

Wednesday 12. March 2008 - • Optimized net output of up to 95 percent thanks to intelligent automation • The ultimate in flexibility through modular design • Optimum quality and reliability in production combined with exceptional ease of use • End-to-end precision with the new Eurotrim 4000 three-knife trimmer • The streamlined adhesive binder

Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) is launching a whole new set of options for the Eurobind 4000 adhesive binder at drupa 2008. The Eurobind 4000 is highly automated, offers exceptionally short makeready times of just a few minutes, and enables fast job changes. It processes up to 4,000 books per hour and its outstanding net output of up to 95 percent makes it the most cost-effective adhesive binder currently on the market. Its modular design delivers the ultimate in flexibility, a feature that has now been further enhanced by new options. These options include a criss-crossed delivery, a back-stripping station, a PUR spine nozzle and the new Eurotrim 4000 three-knife trimmer.

All this means that postpress specialists can configure the machine to meet their own specific needs and add value by offering differentiated and specialized products that are tailored to customer requirements. The Eurobind 4000 is ideal for professional use and average run levels of approximately 10,000 copies. The device processes paperbacks, magazines, annual reports and image brochures with a block (end-to-end) height of 140 to 450 mm (5.51 to 17.72 in), a block width of 100 to 320 mm (3.94 to 12.60 in), and a block thickness of 2 to 60 mm (0.079 to 2.36 in).

Optimum quality and reliability in production combined with exceptional ease of use
The gathering machine of the Eurobind 4000 consists of up to eight modules – each with four feeders – that form independent units due to the use of separate servo drives. The optional criss-crossed delivery now enables stand-alone operation. Book blocks collated in this way can then be finished in a thread-stitching machine.

A stored product type catalog is used to preset the adhesive binder and automatically select all the assemblies required for spine preparation, the adhesive and the cover feeder. Format settings can be entered quickly and easily using the touchscreen and its tried-and-tested Heidelberg user interface. The adhesive binder itself is made up of 18 or 23 clamps. Besides the exchangeable two-roller application system for hotmelt and PUR adhesives, there is also a new third option – a closed PUR nozzle application system. This enables adhesive to be applied more accurately, which in turn reduces emissions and makes cleaning the machine far easier.
Combined with perfect spine preparation, a high-quality product can be achieved in all instances.

The new back-stripping station can be integrated as an option for the production of spine-free brochures or book blocks. The lining material is cut with absolute precision and automatically applied to the book block.
End-to-end precision with the Eurotrim 4000 three-knife trimmer
The new Eurotrim 4000 three-knife trimmer is designed for simple and multiple trimming. An infeed gripper system lifts the product to ensure the material is not marked or damaged when it is fed into the cutting cell. Products are transported with the spine leading. The product is optimally aligned on the cutting table, thereby enabling minimal trimming tolerances. Servomotors ensure reproducible trimming precision. And all of this can be achieved with short makeready times. The products that are to be trimmed are pressed down over their entire area and cut on three sides using the knives.

The streamlined adhesive binder
The Eurobind 4000 is controlled from local control panels with touchscreen displays. The gathering machine and the Eurotrim 4000 three-knife trimmer are each equipped with one touchscreen display, while the adhesive binder itself has two or, if required, three displays. As a result, the machine can be operated from precisely the location where production is currently underway. This makes the machine incredibly easy to operate and minimizes makeready times. All the control panels are networked.

Prinect enables the Eurobind 4000 to be integrated into the entire printshop workflow. Job and presetting data such as cutting and folding marks from prepress can be used directly for the Eurobind 4000. This delivers short makeready times and exceptional transparency for upcoming print jobs. Precisely defined processes avoid errors and boost the reliability of production systems.

Complete adhesive binder series
Heidelberg has the right adhesive binding solution for all run levels and applications – from the entry-level Eurobind 600/600 PUR, to the Eurobind 1300/1300 PUR and the high-performance Eurobind 4000 model. This portfolio is further complemented by the Eurotrim 1000 and Eurotrim 4000 three-knife trimmers.
