Rollem Revolution – A Safe Bet at Ipex
Tuesday 25. May 2010 - Rollem has teamed up with Heidelberg and Sappi to produce 32,000 packs of playing cards during Ipex. Prior to the exhibition, Heidelberg used a Speedmaster XL 105-10-P to print the cards on 285 gsm Sappi Algro Design Card, and during Ipex Rollem will use its Revolution finishing system to demonstrate how one operator can transform seamlessly printed sheets into fully wrapped decks.
“The 676 x 576 mm sheets each contain 56 cards, which includes two extra cards for the top and bottom of every pack,” says managing director Stuart Murphy. “The Revolution system will automatically slit, collate, count and punch, producing cards of casino quality. The king and queen might appear a little fatter than usual because the packs will be US poker size, which is wider than a standard pack typically used in the UK!
“Heidelberg set up the artwork for the cards using its Prinect workflow, which was highly efficient, and were extremely grateful to both Heidelberg and Sappi for their willingness to work with us on the project. During Ipex well demonstrate Revolution on-line to a separate wrapping unit. The completed wrapped packs of cards will be available free of charge on all three companies stands.”
The Revolution is being demonstrated at Ipex with the new Rollem Deep Pile Feeder. This rear separated, digitally controlled feeder offers a range of advantages over the previous version. It is more compact, provides greater rigidity, is much easier to operate and can be used with a range of sheet sizes.
Revolution is arguably the most productive, accurate and versatile system in the world for turning printed sheets into playing cards of casino quality. Autolay, the automatic image drift compensation facility, ensures perfect registration to print, with a slit accuracy of +/- 0.05mm.
The level of automation built into Revolution means that one operator can perform six different tasks. Most settings are programmed and the majority of work can be run without blade changes, enabling the fastest possible turnaround between jobs. The ability to make adjustments on-the-fly allows the operator to compensate for variations in sheet size while the job is running.
Rollem designs all its systems to be versatile and the collator can easily be rolled away to enable Revolution to be used for other work such as POS leaflets, greetings cards, brochures etc. Functions such as scoring, creasing, perforating and micro-perforating, can all be easily brought into action while the integrated die punch allows the production of labels, tags, cards etc.
Revolution will handle stock in weights from 100 gsm to 500 gsm, and from 500 x 500 mm to 712 x 762 mm in size, creating finished items from 50 x 75 mm up to 125 x 250 mm. The typical running speed is 2,400 sph. Rollem is demonstrating the equipment at Ipex on-line to a Marden Edwards overwrapping machine, which will wrap individual packs.
