Digital painting and digital metallisation with 3D effect

Tuesday 17. January 2023 - The heart of the system is Steinemann DPEs innovative inkjet technology with UV coating, which is combined with KURZ DIGITAL METAL finishing technology. The inkjet technology enables flat as well as haptic effects with different layer thicknesses.

During the KURZ LABEL WEEKS, LEONHARD KURZ presented the DM-UNILINER 3D, the latest development from its subsidiary Steinemann DPE. The DM-UNILINER 3D is an innovative stand-alone digital printing system for finishing labels with impressive 3D effects. The digital printing system enables almost flat as well as raised varnish and metallisation effects.
“The DM-UNILINER 3D is a real game changer for the label industry. It masters glossy as well as matt flat spot varnishing and relief varnishing with haptic effects, but also brilliant metallisation in a single step,” explains Jordi Giralt, Global Head of Sales for Digital Finishing Solutions at KURZ. “The modular DM-UNILINER 3D gives our customers an efficient and flexible way to do analogue finishing now digitally or to open up new business areas by entering finishing per se,” Giralt continues. The innovative system has already been installed at international customers.
Bundled competence from KURZ and Steinemann DPE
With the DM-UNILINER 3D, unusual design ideas for small to medium-sized product series and special editions in the narrow-web sector can be realised digitally at low cost. The heart of the system is Steinemann DPE’s innovative inkjet technology with UV coating, which is combined with KURZ DIGITAL METAL finishing technology. The inkjet technology enables flat as well as haptic effects with different layer thicknesses – perfect for larger surfaces, but also for filigree structures. These can be finished with a variety of metallisation effects, high-gloss or matt designs.
Digital metallisation can be applied in a similar way to analogue finishing in cold transfer before colour printing (preprint) and then overprinted in colour or used in a similar way to analogue hot stamping decoration after colour printing (postprint). Up to six different metallisation rolls can be processed in parallel on the DM-UNILINER 3D, creating unique metallisation designs. The digital coating can be used as functional protection over the digital metallisation or simply as a design element.
Depending on the substrate and design, 3D print jobs can be finished on the DM-UNILINER at up to 100 m/min, with roll diameters of up to 800 mm enabling time-optimised work without roll changes. The industrial design with intuitive and simple operation enables fast job changes, and the system also impresses with its low coating consumption, very short setup times and low maintenance requirements. As a genuine system solution, all components of the DM-UNILINER 3D are ideally coordinated: Machine, software, consumables and service – all from a single source.
