Journal Register Company Publications Named as Three of 10 Newspapers Who Do It Right

Thursday 24. February 2011 - The Register Citizen, The Oakland Press and The Mercury Honored by Editor & Publisher

Journal Register Company, a leading local news and information company, announced today the selection of three publications to Editor & Publisher Magazine’s annual 10 Newspapers Who Do It Right list.
The Register Citizen, The Oakland Press and The Mercury are featured in the annual compilation in the March edition of Editor & Publisher.
“We are very pleased to have our employees’ work considered among the best in the industry. Their innovation and experimentation provides our Company and industry with examples to follow,” said John Paton, Chief Executive Officer of Journal Register Company.
The Register Citizen in Torrington, Connecticut — recently honored with the first-ever Innovator of the Month award by the Associated Press Managing Editors — was named to Editor & Publisher’s list as a “standout” for multiple innovations including the site’s new open, community-focused newsroom, newsroom café and livestreaming of editorial meetings.
Both The Mercury and The Oakland Press are featured in the “Digital and Online Initiatives” category.
The Mercury of Pottstown, Pennsylvania was cited, according to Editor & Publisher, for creating “value-based online initiatives” including a fall dining guide and bartender of the year contest. These programs were highlighted for creating revenue as well as driving audience engagement and online traffic.
The Oakland Press of Pontiac, Michigan was honored for the staff’s livestream election coverage and their coverage of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
“Our Digital First approach is about creating new products and new opportunities to deliver news and information to our audience and these are examples of this effort,” Paton said.
