Nordson Powder Coating Dispensing Systems Offer Environmentally Compliant, Cost-Effective Solutions for Metal Packaging Lines

Tuesday 22. September 2009 - The Inside-Spray Powder Dispensing System from Nordson Corporation (NASDAQ:NDSN) is an effective, cost-efficient, environmentally friendly solution for aluminum tube and aerosol monobloc manufacturers who face increasing requirements for reduced solvent emissions. The powder coating replaces liquid coatings typically used on aluminum tube and one-piece aerosol containers with durable, approved powder coatings, eliminating VOCs and optimizing product performance and quality.

Powder coatings are gaining recognition among metal container manufacturers because they provide a more environmentally friendly solution than liquid coatings. Powder coatings eliminate solvents from the coating process and reduce waste disposal costs, all while providing a clean, easy-to-maintain work environment. It addition, powder coatings also require less curing time and lower temperatures than their liquid counterparts.

“The interest in powder coating for metal packaging is definitely on the rise,” explains Mark Novotny, global marketing manager for Nordson’s container systems group. “There seems to be growing concern regarding BPA content in coatings and the desire for alternative, non-BPA coatings. Powder coatings may play a greater role in the future if the industry adapts to non-BPA alternatives.”

The Inside-Spray Powder Coating equipment from Nordson improves overall efficiency of metal container coating lines in several ways:

No major modifications required – applies powder to the container in the existing production line, reducing installation and new technology costs.
Optimizes product performance and quality.
Eliminates incinerator costs for internal coating.
Eliminates paint disposal costs for internal coating.
Nearly 95% material usage with recycling of overspray.
Clean, environmentally friendly application process for operators.
Same high flexibility coating capabilities as wet coating.
Integrated system maximizes transfer efficiency

The Inside-Spray Powder Dispensing System incorporates Nordson Sure Coat powder spray guns and an integrated feed center that includes feed hoppers, an ultrasonic sieve, a Nordson HDLV (high density powder, low volume air) pump and controls. The powder spray guns are located on the spray machine, in a manner similar to liquid spray guns. Cans are conveyed to the spray station, where powder coating is sprayed via a lance extension on the Sure Coat gun. The powder particles receive an electrostatic charge as they exit the gun, attracting the particles to the grounded container.

The electrostatic charge can be adjusted in 1 kV increments (from 25 to 95 kV) using Nordson Automated Feedback Control technology, providing maximum transfer efficiency. In addition, the lance extension – which can be customized based on application requirements – provides even powder distribution throughout the inside surface of the container wall and bottom. As a result, the system is capable of achieving transfer efficiencies that exceed 95 percent.
