Girl Power at manroland

Not just for boys: On Girls’ Day, the girls were eager to learn about printing presses at manroland in Augsburg, Germany.

Friday 24. April 2009 - On Girls’ Day, girls conquer the printing world

On Girls’ Day, 22 young women visited manroland in Augsburg, Germany, to find out about apprenticeship careers in printing.

On this annual action day, a total of 800,000 girls so far have discovered careers in which women are still under-represented, such as printer, industrial mechanic, or mechatronic engineer. manroland has participated in Girls’ Day for many years and offers a behind-the-scenes look at these professions.

Learning by doing: 22 girls between the ages of 14 and 16 visited the workshops in the MAN vocational training center. They gathered impressions of the drawing school, machining, oxy-arc cutting, milling, and the electrical training. During the subsequent tour of manroland’s and MAN Diesel’s production and final production, they were impressed by the large dimensions of the machines.

The girls agree: “You should find out about different types of careers as early on as possible. This includes all jobs, even the so-called male professions. Before Girls’ Day, I never would have thought I’d like this kind of job.” Kaspar Fischer, Senior Manager MAN Training Center, says: “We are increasingly seeking female junior staff. Girls are often very talented technically, but criteria such as social behavior and ambition are also of great importance to us. Girls’ Day is our chance to recruit female apprentices for technical careers.”

At its production locations, manroland trains apprentices in the following professions: printer, mechatronic engineer, technical drawer, machinist, construction mechanic, industrial mechanic, electronics engineer, industrial sales representative, specialist for warehouse logistics, IT specialist, and IT system electrician. A course of studies with in-depth practical work or an integrated course of studies (machine construction, electrical engineering, IT, digital media, mechatronics, and business administration) is possible. Of course, if male students are interested, these offers also apply to them.
