Wednesday 08. April 2009 - Tipografia Moretti - or the Passion of Beautiful Work

Founded in a garage in 1969 by Annibale Moretti, Tipografia Moretti today employs ten people, in addition to the family. The word “passion” impresses itself on the visitor as soon as they cross the threshold of this company in Castello di Soncino, northern Italy. One immediately senses a love of beautiful work, and finished products of great quality. Lorenza and Annibale, the parents, and their two sons, Damiano and Daniele, are joined together in the pleasure of successfully servicing their customers, in the best sense of the term. It is not without reason that quality and the meeting of deadlines have made the family’s reputation. They do not rest on their laurels and they devote their energies to getting the best from a ‘state of the art’ machine park, something which allows them to continually improve performance at favorable cost. Production at Tipografia Moretti comprises of 90% straightline boxes and 8% crashlock, with 2% being 4-corner boxes. The boxes are striking because of their quality of manufacture and many are made for household names which entrust the realization of their high added-value packaging to the Moretti family.

A single supplier for converting
Order and efficiency reign in the workshop, where the machine park includes print, diecutting, foil stamping, and folding & gluing. For Lorenza Moretti, “it is absolutely normal to put ones hand to the job, when needed”. Print encompasses a six color offset press which allows UV printing on a very varied range of substrates from paper to plastic. Diecutting, embossing and folding & gluing of the plant’s products is carried out on the machines of just one supplier: BOBST. In addition to the most recent innovations – an EXPERTCUT diecutter with Power Register and an EXPERTFOLD folder-gluer, both introduced at Drupa 08 – one will also find an SP 102 EII diecutter, SPeria 102 Foilmaster hot stamping press, the first in Italy, and an ALPINA folder-gluer. The variety of this equipment, and the way each complements the other, clearly shows that this company wants to remain at the leading edge when it comes to offering services to its customers. This is not only in terms of being able to deliver, but also in being able to offer a large number of opportunities to add value to the customers’ products.

The policy of Annibale Moretti has been to always buy new machines “I have never regretted it” he says. The two last arrivals, the EXPERTCUT and EXPERTFOLD, had to pass extremely tough tests before being installed at Tipografia Moretti. “The demonstrations were practically perfect, with the preparation by the instructor being excellent. The technical support available from Lausanne contributed to our decision and, thanks to Marco Locatelli from BOBST’s Italian subsidiary company, we already knew how professional the support would be that we would get in our country. The SP 102 EII, which was our first BOBST line, never presented us with any technical problems, and nor did any of the subsequent machines!”.

Technology at the service of know-how
Tipografia Moretti has been the perfect opportunity to show the extent of the capabilities of the EXPERTCUT diecutter with its Power Register system for the automatic positioning of sheets in register. And, certainly, Lorenza Moretti is not complaining:
“Until the arrival of this machine, it was me who separated the blanks by hand. “Today, in addition to saving hands and elbows, the blank separating station on the EXPERTCUT delivers a time saving of 80%. A carton insert for women’s tights packaging is run in double cut blanking mode, hence the product is made with far fewer, smaller nicks. It goes without saying that this solution completely satisfies Tipografia Moretti’s customers, because at the end of the production chain their products pack without tears. In another case, a sheet of nine blanks with originally 60 nicks now has no more than three very small nicks per blank. In general, the EXPERTCUT with blank separation station has made it possible to reduce the number of nicks by 50 to 60% and the benefits are also being felt at the folder-gluer. The feeding of blanks which have many fewer nicks is infinitely better and, consequently, the 450 meters per minute speed of the EXPERTFOLD is exploited to the maximum. The two folder-gluers are allocated to different types of work: four-corner boxes are produced on the ALPINA folder-gluer and straightline boxes on the EXPERTFOLD. This has been equipped with peripherals for feeding (EASYFEEDER GT) and collecting boxes (CARTONPACK GT) in order that the line can always produce at maximum speed.

For Annibale Moretti, the training by the BOBST instructors proceeded so well that the EXPERTCUT diecutter with Power Register produced over 1.3 million sheets in the ten weeks following its installation at the company “the BOBST personnel were particularly attentive in answering our questions and in finding technical solutions when we needed help”.
