Convincing New Developments

Monday 12. May 2008 - OYSTAR Hassia now an important supplier to Campina Deutschland

OYSTAR Hassia has been given the status of an important supplier by Campina Deutschland. Most recently, OYSTAR Hassia delivered and in-stalled three new packaging machines at the Campina Deutsch-land headquarters in Heilbronn and the company’s Elsterwerda plant. In doing so, OYSTAR Hassia has helped Campina imple-ment its strategy of harmonizing its fleet of machines. The expe-rienced Ranstadt, Germany-based company won the contract due to its innovativeness and flexible machine concepts. The highlight is the TAS 32/80, a form/fill/seal machine for cups that has now begun operating: it is the first aseptic FFS system to use a doser able to make swirled products.
Asked why they placed the order with OYSTAR, Norbert Reuss, managing director of Campina Deutschland, replies that “We wanted to consolidate the machines used in our corporate group, and we also needed systems we could depend on. This was one of the reasons. But this supplier’s flexibility and innovativeness were also important reasons.”
OYSTAR Hassia developed a special doser for Campina that is able to make swirled products – an effect that until now could only be achieved with premade cups, which were rotated while being filled. The new Hassia doser has swirl dosers that twist two different prod-ucts into the cup. To make sure that both products are twisted in the same pattern, all servodriven movements have to be synchronized. The TAS 32/80 is designed for up to four dosers. Special control modes also let product assortments be assembled, which is another market first.
The TAS 32/80 used in Heilbronn also very successfully meets Campina’s wish for greater package sterility and longer shelf life: it is the very first aseptic FFS machine that makes swirled products. The aseptic unit uses saturated steam heated to 150 degrees Celsius in-stead of H2O2, also developed by Hassia. The positive side-effects include an error rate of just 0.5 ppm (parts per million) or very close to zero. Plus, because no H2O2 is needed, more value is generated in production.
The TAS 32/80 in Heilbronn is able to fill cups with swirled pudding – also with whipped cream – as well as a single pudding variety, pud-ding on a bed of another product or with various toppings, or two layered or adjacent products. Up to 53,760 cups an hour can be deep-drawn, sterilized, filled and sealed, depending on the product properties, package geometry and filling level.
The THM 32/80 Hygienic active form/fill/seal machine from OYSTAR Hassia has been running in Elsterwerda since 2006. It is mainly used to make double-chamber cups filled with dairy products and cere-als. One of its special features is the ability to process triangular and pentagonal cups. A large range of products can also e packaged, because the four dosers are equipped with four product containers. They can also be used in different combinations. Cereals are dosed with the aid of a 24-head scale in a climatized room. Here every ef-fort has been made to ensure compliance with a very strict hygienic standard: the packages are also sterilized with saturated steam.
At Campina’s German headquarters in Heilbronn, a further FFS cup sys-tem from OYSTAR Hassia is now being installed: a TAS 16/80, which is an aseptic yogurt machine for two different cup formats and two cup heights. The banding unit was specially reengineered for this machine. It works inline, permits 360-degree labeling, and can be set to either of the two possible cup heights.
It uses steam heated to up to 150 degrees Celsius for sterilization. The plan is to use it to package stirred yogurt and fruit yogurt with up to three components. Depending on the product properties, the package geo-metry, the filling level and the machinability of the packing materials, it forms, fills and seals up to 43,200 cups an hour – with two different cup formats and inline decoration, i.e. full-circumference labeling (banding) in different heights.
Campina is intensively taking advantage of the expertise of the OYSTAR Group: around 60 machines from OYSTAR companies, es-pecially Hassia, A+F (Kirchlengern), Gasti (Schwäbisch Hall) and Hamba (Neunkirchen), are now being used at the seven German Campina facilities.
