Epson Supports Professional Landscape Photographer on the Road to Medical Recovery

Thursday 10. October 2013 - Kevin Young Leverages the Power of Epson Wide-Format Printers and Signature Worthy Media to Create Upcoming Exhibit and Sellable Prints

Two years ago, a bizarre accident left photographer Kevin Young temporarily paralyzed from the neck down. To help offset resulting medical costs, he now creates and sells fine art prints of his serene landscape photographs using the 17-inch Epson Stylus() Pro 3880 wide-format printer and Epson Signature Worthy() media. The photographer’s work will be showcased in his Sand & Sea exhibition from Sept. 23 through November at The Frame Maker in San Diego, Calif.
In July 2011, while standing waist deep in the ocean, Young dove forward into an unknown object and broke his neck in three places. The immediate neck-down paralysis caused him to drown and his heart to stop. After an off-duty nurse revived him, two spinal surgeries and two years of physical therapy, he overcame the quadriplegia and most of the effects of spinal cord damage, and now sells his photography to help with his medical bills and ongoing recovery.
His first exhibit since the accident will feature 30 prints on Signature Worthy photographic and fine art papers, printed with the 17-inch Epson Stylus Pro 3880 and 24-inch Epson Stylus Pro 7900.
“Photography continues to play an important role in my recovery, from the hope it instills to the motivation required to once again hold a camera in my hands, compose a shot and create incredible imagery,” said Kevin Young, freelance photographer with a bachelor’s degree in fine art from the Rochester Institute of Technology.
“With the added support of Epson and its gracious supply of a Pro 3880 printer and professional fine art media to aid with the production and sale of my prints, I am able to offset medical costs and ongoing physical therapy.”
Gallery Quality Prints
Up to 17×22 inches, the Epson Stylus Pro 3880 prints display the brilliant colors and detail of Young’s nature photography, seascapes and desert landscapes. Images printed on Epson Hot Press Natural media highlight the vivid color, contrast and sharpness of Young’s already brilliant photographs. The printer’s three-level black ink system output richer blacks, striking tonal range and gray balance in Young’s black-and-white prints like “Crystal Moon Dream,” depicting an ocean pier in ghostly moonlight.
“Making my own prints for the show has been very fulfilling,” said Young. “I’ve always been a perfectionist, so having control over the finished product is of utmost importance. Given the simple set up and ease-of-use associated with the Epson Stylus Pro 3880, I’ve been able to do test prints for color accuracy and variations until I can accurately replicate my creative photographic vision in print.”
The printer’s extremely wide color gamut and Epson UltraChrome K3() with Vivid Magenta ink technology intensifies the blues and violets of Young’s passionate “WindanSea Waterways” with crystal clear water flowing toward the Pacific. The smooth color transitions and highlight and shadow details of Young’s graceful “Steadfast” were brought to light with the AccuPhoto(TM) HD2 Imaging Technology inherent in the Epson 3880. Plus, the advanced MicroPiezo() AMC(TM) print head and its accurate dot placement ensured crisp image detail.
Sharing the Passion
“I am excited to re-enter the photography world to continue to share my passion with those following in similar footsteps,” Young said. “The process of capturing and creating landscape prints is a big part of my life – these images are the byproduct of the way I’ve perceived the environment since growing up in the beautiful Adirondack region of upstate New York. Through the creation of these prints, I am able to reflect onto others the incredibly powerful moments and places I have experienced on my journey.”
