Sign Recycling Initiative Hits More Than 500 Tonnes for Xmo Strata and Shell
Tuesday 12. February 2013 - Sign installation and maintenance firm, Xmo Strata, has reported that more than 500 tonnes of waste material from one project alone has been recycled thanks to a new initiative which addresses customer demand in reducing waste across their global supply chains.
The company – which manages complex re-branding and maintenance work on forecourts across the UK – says this will now be standard procedure on all sign programmes in the future and will be monitored, analysed and reported through a new module incorporated into its comprehensive project management software system, XmoMan.
“Environmental concerns have been on the agenda for quite some time, but customers are now really starting to invest in this area and are looking to their suppliers to support them in their efforts,” said Steve Martin, Managing Director, Xmo Strata. “The crucial thing for us, as a supplier, is being able to show tangible evidence of the materials recycled. We can’t just suck our finger and stick it up in the air – customers need hard evidence, and this means offering complex reports including what is being recycled, where the waste is being taken and what the overall impact is on each and every project.”
Xmo Strata’s new recycling traceability module on the XmoMan system allows reports to be generated at the touch of a button and can break information down by client, project and site, allowing for complete and immediate visibility across the company. The system also allows the company to do trend analysis, ensuring that waste sent to landfill is minimal.
The initial project for Shell, during which the company first implemented this initiative, was a re-brand programme which involved the installation of 6,500 new signs and 15km of fascia.
“500 tonnes of recycled material may seem like a lot for one project, and in fact it amounts to the weight of around 75 elephants in reality, but when you consider the amount of signage that had to be removed in order to complete the re-brand, it does add up and is auditable,” added Martin.
“It’s great to see customers taking this so seriously and pushing suppliers to up their game in terms of environmental awareness. We have also received strong support from Shell’s project management team at Artelia which has been very encouraging.
“Having seen what is achievable, and how we are able to add value to customers, it leaves you wondering why you haven’t been doing it all along.”
Xmo Strata is accredited to ISO 14001 – an internationally recognised environmental standard which demonstrates a company has a systematic management system in place to control the effects its business has on the environment.
“We take our quality, safety and environmental accreditations seriously and are always looking at ways to strengthen our commitment as a company in these areas. This latest initiative is a prime example of how working closely with our customers can see benefits all round.”
