Yurchak Printing Talks Trends at Publishing Summit 2011
Thursday 05. May 2011 - Inventory control and eBooks among topics at select gathering of digital book publishing customers
Océ, a Canon Group Company and an international leader in digital document management, today announced that it helped Yurchak Printing present a forum on digital book publishing for a select group of executives. The recent Publishing Summit 2011 was held at Yurchak Printing, Inc. in Landisville, PA.
Yurchak Printing, headed up by John W. Yurchak, Jr., assembled a group of digital book publishing customers for a discussion of key issues about this growing digital market.
Expertise Ahead of the Curve
“Yurchak Printing has led the way in digital printing since 1998. Today, they are experts in the digital world, so they were a natural to host this Publishing Summit,” said Francis McMahon, Vice President of Marketing, Océ North America, Production Printing Systems.
Chris Rice of Cambridge University Press of NY agreed that “Yurchak is well beyond the digital learning curve.” He was among the attendees who gained perspective on the continuing role of digital print in their own businesses and got insights into the future of the market.
Market-changing Trends
Yurchak identified market-changing trends in book publishing, including:
shorter print runs
better inventory management
digital color growth
electronic delivery
offset migration to digital
Selling Inventory, Not Printing
Selling inventory control over selling printing was a key message at the Publishing Summit. Now publishers demand shorter runs and better ways to manage inventory, an essential shift. Rick Ritter of Gryphon Editions agreed that “controlling print runs and inventory through digital printing is really valuable.”
Also confirming this message was Steve Garland, Executive Editor of Manufacturer’s News, Inc., who said, “Options for keeping current inventory are something we want to explore.” Manufacturer’s News, in its one hundredth year, publishes annual state directories. Each year, they work with Yurchak Printing to publish 51 books in 52 weeks.
The Unexpected Impact of eBooks
Another topic covered at the Publishing Summit was the rise in e-books and how that is impacting the need for printed volumes. Yurchak stated, “The recession and the rise in e-books have actually helped us compete with larger printers, because we can handle smaller runs and more customizable solutions.”
At the Publishing Summit, John Yurchak also shared information presented at the INTERQUEST 2011 Digital Book Printing Forum, held on April 5, 2011 in New York City:
Conventional book printing is declining 4.6 percent per year, as digitally printed volumes are expected to grow at 29 percent annually.
Currently, four percent of all printed books are manufactured digitally and that will increase to 15 percent by 2015.
More self-published and micro niche titles were produced in 2009 than traditional titles.
