DNP Commences Marketing High Security Micro SD Card Development Kit

Monday 31. January 2011 - Facilitates use of High Security Smart Card Applications

From the end of January 2011, Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) will market a development kit for applications using micro SD cards mounted with high security operating systems targeting smart card uses. The development kit combines a micro SD card with a device driver in a single set, and can be used in the development of applications using smart cards, including identity authentication cards and encryption.
[Developmental Backdrop and Summary]
In line with the recent expansion seen in the use of internet based authentication and settlements using such equipment as smart phones and tablet computers, there has also been a subsequent increase in calls for more sophisticated security to back up these services. Professional mobile terminals, such as the handy terminals used for settlements, data input and inventory control, require measures to authenticate legitimate users in order to prevent unauthorized use and data leaks. In November 2009, DNP developed the world’s first MULTOS version micro SD card as a security device capable of being used with such data terminals.
The DNP developed micro SD card is mounted with a high security operating system that has a track record with smart cards, allowing for the use of such existing smart card applications as company IDs, membership cards, cash and credit. As the DNP developed micro SD card can be used with any micro SD compatible equipment, there is no need to use a dedicated smart card reader-writer, which had been a bothersome task to transport when on the move. As the micro SD card also has a large memory, it is possible to store set up programs for notebooks and various equipment that had been difficult to store in a smart card. It is also possible to store micro SD linked device drivers and digital contents including e-books and video.
Since developing the MULTOS version, DNP has developed micro SD based applications in answer to company needs for the development of applications using micro SD cards on their in-house equipment and systems, and has successfully created a unique DNP Standard-9 V5 micro SD card that has a well developed track record as a universal smart card. The Company will also market a development kit in order to provide a suitable development environment for applications using micro SD. By using the new kit, operators already developing applications using smart cards, will be in a position to handle micro SD cards in the same way as existing smart cards.
