Inaugural Pink Palm Walk Announced
Tuesday 21. September 2010 - Breast Cancer Walk Comes to Kingsville
EmbroidMe-Kingsville and CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Kleberg have announced their Inaugural Pink Palm Breast Cancer Walk will be held Saturday, October 9, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. in Kingsville, Texas at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Kleberg to commemorate October as the 25th anniversary of breast cancer awareness month. National statistics show that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer every year. This inaugural walk shows community support for survivors of breast cancer and families who have lost a loved one to breast cancer.
All of South Texas is invited to dress in pink shirts and help show their support for the fight against breast cancer. The one-mile walk will skirt the grounds of CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Kleberg and walkers will have access to 10 Pink Palm Stations sponsored by local families and businesses who have been affected by breast cancer.
“We are very excited about this event,” said Carol Geryk, Owner and President of EmbroidMe-Kingsville. “We are planning on having it every year and hope we can
make a local impact. One in eight is an alarming number.”
Local volunteers from Kingsville NAS, Texas A&M University-Kingsville and surrounding high schools will proudly be displaying their pink shirts from EmbroidMe-Kingsville while operating the Pink Palm Stations and encouraging walkers to take a step against breast cancer. Attendees who visit all Pink Palm Stations will be eligible for door prizes at the finish line. To visually show statistics of one in eight women diagnosed with breast cancer, pink bandannas will be given away to one in eight participants.
The CHRISTUS Spohn Cancer Center is the regions only cancer program nationally accredited by The American Collage of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. The Cancer Center offers women The Breast Care Program which brings together all aspects of breast cancer awareness, detection and care, emphasizing education and community outreach with a weekly Breast Cancer Support Group. In addition, the Cancer Center also offers the Breast Cancer Patient Navigator Program, which provides individually designed “care maps” for a newly diagnosed breast cancer patient and helps guide them through the health care system.
“Everyday I see many whose lives have been changed by this vicious form of cancer,” said Norman McBride, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Kleberg. “This is the first day in my life that I would love to see the hospital parking lot full!”
