Telegram & Gazette Announces Launch to New Paid Metered Model for Its Web Site, Telegram.com
Thursday 19. August 2010 - The Telegram & Gazette announced today it will adopt a new paid metered model for its Web site, telegram.com, beginning tomorrow that will apply to local articles produced by the Telegram & Gazette. Newspaper subscribers will continue to receive unlimited access to news content on telegram.com as part of their subscriptions.
When accessing the award-winning local news articles produced by the Telegram & Gazette on telegram.com, all users, including subscribers, will be asked to register. Once registered, users who are not subscribers will be given free access to10 local articles per calendar month. Local articles will be labeled with T&G. After non-subscriber users pass that limit they may choose from a variety of options in order to view additional T&G articles, including a monthly charge of $14.95 or a 24-hour day pass for $1.00.
The T&G’s local articles bring readers the area’s most comprehensive report on the region’s news and information. Telegram.com stories are written by the T&G’s professional journalists who cover the area from a locally-informed perspective, and provide in-depth coverage of a wide range of topics of high local interest – schools, government, sports, lifestyle and entertainment, as well as area businesses.
All other information on telegram.com, the largest news and information Web site in Central Massachusetts , will continue to be provided free to all users and includes breaking news bulletins, articles obtained from news services, obituaries, classified advertising, local blogs, photo galleries and videos. All information from the newspaper’s weekly products, available on TelegramTowns.com, will also remain free.
“The metered model supports our ability to cover local government, from city hall to schools, and sports from little league to the Boston Celtics,” said Bruce Gaultney, publisher, Telegram & Gazette. “It will keep the majority of our site free and only charge non-subscribers who are reading more than 10 local news articles in a month.”
Leah Lamson, editor of the newspaper, added, “Every day our journalists provide readers with original reporting that makes a difference to the community. We want to continue to bring that trusted value to our readers . And, we want to deliver it in whatever way they want whether in print, online or on mobile devices.”
The Telegram & Gazette covers 72 cities and towns in Central Massachusetts as well as portions of Connecticut . In addition to its Web site and the Sunday Telegram, the daily Telegram & Gazette publishes Worcester Living, a quarterly lifestyle magazine, seven different TelegramTowns weeklies, and The Item and The Banner. The daily newspaper won 12 awards earlier this month, including two first place awards in the website category, in the New England Associated Press News Executives Association contest. The association gives the awards annually for work in writing, photography and design.
