UPM SHOTTON MATERIALS RECOVERY FACILITY TAKES SHAPE

Monday 07. June 2010 - UPM Shotton's materials recovery has taken a step further with main steel work being put into place, marking a major milestone for the £17M investment.

Announced earlier this year, the materials recovery facility will be able to sort up to 250,000 tonnes of comingled materials sourced from across the UK once fully operational. Around 120,000 tonnes will be newspapers and magazines – providing 20% of the recovered paper used as raw material in the mill’s paper production. Surplus recyclable material will be recycled by other reprocessors as required.

The materials recovery facility has been designed to allow UPM Shotton mill to sort dry recyclables such as plastic bottles, cardboard, newspapers, magazines and metals. The investment is supported by the Welsh Assembly Government with a GBP 1.7m Single Investment Fund grant and will have up to 150 people working on the construction phase of the facility.

Undertaking the construction work is Eric Wright Group. UPM has also appointed Machinex for the supply and installation sorting equipment and lines. When complete the facility will be the keystone of UPM Shotton’s recycling service setting new market leading standards for quality, value and service.

Mr David Green, UPM Project Director for the facility build said: “We are extremely pleased to be able to reach this significant milestone in our project. By choosing good quality and experienced partners such as Machinex and Eric Wright Group, we believed that we have best possible platform to reach future milestones and start up in January 2011.

The Machinex design will allow the materials recovery rate will be at least 99%, setting a new high standard for materials recovery” he added.
