Oldenbourg Launches New Publishing Platform, Powered by Atypon

Thursday 21. January 2010 - Atypon Systems, Inc. today announced that the Oldenbourg Verlagsgruppe, one of Germany’s most venerable academic publishers, is using Atypon’s software to power its just-launched publishing platform for its journals and books.

The Oldenbourg Verlagsgruppe, which includes its subsidiary Akademie Verlag, publishes 40 journals and more than 400 new books each year, the latter of which are being made available in digital format for the first time. In addition, more than 3,000 backlist titles are in the process of being digitized.

The new platform (www.oldenbourg-link.com), which is hosted by Atypon, is available in English and in German. It provides a host of capabilities to librarians and researchers, including the ability to download e-book MARC records for integration with library cataloguing systems.

“Combining our journals and books on the same publishing platform was a natural decision,” said Christine Authenrieth, Managing Director of the Oldenbourg Verlagsgruppe. “By using Atypon’s software to do so, we’ve retained control over our brand, which is how we build relationships with authors and readers, without sacrificing any revenue to revenue-sharing agreements.”

“An increasing percentage of revenue comes from digital products,” said Chris Beckett, Vice President of Business Development for Atypon. “Using Atypon’s software, Oldenbourg is now able to capitalize on changes in the information economy by employing multiple licensing models such as subscriptions and pay-as-you-go, and through the creation of new digital products.”
