SDL XySoft Releases Significant New Version of SDL Contenta S1000D Software to Support Issue 4.0

Friday 20. November 2009 - New version accelerates time-to-adoption of S1000D by simultaneously supporting multiple versions of the specification

SDL XySoft, the leading developer of Component Content Management and Dynamic Publishing solutions, and part of the SDL group, the leader in Global Information Management (GIM), today announced a significant new release of its SDL Contenta CSDB software designed to support the latest version of the S1000D specification – Issue 4.0. This new release helps drive down the total cost of ownership by simultaneously managing multiple versions of the specification in one CSDB.

In successful production for many years with leading defense and aerospace contractors, SDL Contenta S1000D 4.0 offers several unique capabilities that make it the strongest S1000D CSDB solution in the market. On top of its already well recognized powerful project versioning and robust workflow capabilities, the new release of SDL Contenta S1000D adds simultaneous support for prior versions of the S1000D specification. This unique capability eliminates the costly step of converting legacy S1000D data modules and is a critical tool for aerospace or defense programs that are required to maintain multiple versions of the specification at the same time.

“Backward compatibility and simultaneous use with legacy versions of the S1000D standard is a unique market-changing capability delivered with SDL Contenta S1000D 4.0. We have raised the standard by which all CSDBs should be measured with this new release,” said Jennifer Goodman, Vice President, Product Management, SDL XySoft. “Because S1000D can often be mandated right down to the specification level, being able to support multiple specifications in the same CSDB and publication offers huge efficiency gains for our customers and adopters of the specification,” Goodman said.

In addition to supporting multiple versions of the specification, SDL Contenta S1000D is fully integrated with SDL’s publishing technology, which supports the generation and delivery of both Type 1 and Type 2 IETPs. The SDL Contenta S1000D 4.0 solution package comes complete with sample publication formatting styles and IETP skins in order to decrease implementation time and costs. The new release of SDL Contenta S1000D also provides support for the new SCORM content package and Learning Data modules.

SDL Contenta 4.0 also takes full advantage of the new S1000D 4.0 data model/schema that makes it easier to author content, provides more intuitive XML tags and adds a new level of consistency and coherence to the specification. This added level of flexibility makes the S1000D specification a viable option to businesses outside of aerospace and defense, particularly in markets such as manufacturing, transportation and heavy machinery.

Realizing the benefits of developing and deploying S1000D content, the aerospace and defense policy makers are beginning to contractually mandate the use of S1000D as the XML standard to manage the technical publication lifecycle. Use of a CSDB is considered a critical best practice that helps lead to the success of the technical publications program over the life-cycle of the product and is identified as a core requirement within the S1000D specification.
