Author Solutions Now the World Leader of the Most Popular Segment in Book Publishing

Friday 22. May 2009 - New Industry Data Show 2008 was a Watershed Year for On-Demand Indie Book Publishing

Author Solutions (ASI), the world leader in indie book publishing, is now the world leader in the most popular segment of book publishing. For the first time ever, the number of new U.S. on-demand titles brought to market in 2008 (284,370) exceeded new U.S. traditionally-published titles (275,232). Overall, the number of new on-demand titles produced increased 132 percent, while the number of new traditionally-published titles fell 3.2 percent. The data was compiled by Bowker — the world’s leading source for bibliographic information — from more than 75,000 U.S. publishers.

“Clearly, the book publishing industry has reached a tipping point. The efficiencies and technological advantages available through on-demand indie book publishing are game changers. Authors in unprecedented numbers are taking control of their destinies and choosing independence not available through ‘traditional’ publishing,” said Kevin Weiss, ASI president and chief executive officer.

In 2008, the ASI family of publishers — AuthorHouse, iUniverse, Trafford Publishing, Xlibris, and Wordclay — brought to market more than 23,000 new titles: 30 percent more than in 2007. Overall, ASI publishing brands have helped more than 85,000 authors bring more than 120,000 titles to market.
