The Canadian Press launches mobile news sites in partnership with leading media companies
Wednesday 25. March 2009 - Canada's mobile news portal backed by the country's first network of local, national and world news providers
The Canadian Press, Canada’s trusted news leader, launched the country’s most comprehensive English and French mobile news sites today. Canada’s national news agency teamed up with CTVglobemedia, Torstar, Transcontinental and The Associated Press to offer Canadians the best one-stop mobile portal for accessing the latest national, international and local news.
Developed by AP on its award-winning mobile platform, can be accessed from the Web browser on smartphones, cellphones and other wireless devices. The Canadian Press Mobile allows users to quickly and easily view, search, save, share and rate news and photos personalized to their choice of postal codes and topics, selecting news from their hometown, business destination or favourite cities from categories such as business, sports, hockey, entertainment, technology, science, travel and wacky news.
“It’s important for Canada to have its news leaders band together in providing a single access point for comprehensive mobile news,” said Eric Morrison, president of The Canadian Press. “We are all excited to introduce the country’s ultimate mobile portal that gives Canadians the fastest, widest coverage of local, national and world news stories, pictures and soon video and photo galleries from many respected providers. It’s just another great example of how The Canadian Press continues to lead innovative ventures with its partners.”
Content will come from more than 20 communities and a growing list of quality sources, including:
– The Canadian Press, exclusive distributor of AP’s global news in Canada and the Host National News Agency for the 2010 Winter Games with 250 journalists in 14 bureaus across the country.
– The Globe and Mail, Canada’s No.1 national newspaper.
– CTV, Canada’s No.1 television network with coverage from British Columbia, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.
– The Toronto Star, Canada’s largest daily newspaper.
– Transcontinental Media, Eastern Canada’s leading community newspaper publisher with coverage from Nova Scotia’s Amherst Daily News, Cape Breton Post, Truro Daily News and The News (New Glasgow); Prince Edward Island’s Journal Pioneer (Summerside) and The Guardian (Charlottetown); Saskatchewan’s Moose Jaw-Times Herald and Prince Albert Herald; Newfoundland’s The Telegram (St. John’s) and The Western Star (Corner Brook).
“For The Globe and Mail, being a part of this all-in-one mobile news portal is about giving Canadians the choice of getting a lot of credible, current content in one place,” said Angus Frame, director of digital media for globeandmail.com. “It’s a big benefit to users for the convenience alone and also a great opportunity for local and national advertisers to target relevant messages to consumers always on the go.”
At next week’s CTIA Wireless 2009 (April 1-3), conference attendees are invited to demonstrations of The Canadian Press Mobile and other applications from The Associated Press at AP Booth No. 1400-H in the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.
“Working with The Canadian Press, we hope to extend our early success with AP Mobile by creating a global footprint for news from the most trusted sources,” said Jeffrey Litvack, general manager of mobile and emerging products at AP. “In the coming weeks, look for the release of Canadian Press client apps optimized for the most popular smartphones in the marketplace.”
