Tina Brown Says Print Will Survive, At NYU Media Talk Event
Wednesday 11. March 2009 - The Daily Beast founder and editor-in-chief Tina Brown and The New York Times media columnist David Carr discussed the current state of the publishing industry and its need to adapt in the latest of NYU's Media Talk event series, "Staying Current, Clickable and Profitable," which took place on February 25, 2009.
Sponsored by the Center for Publishing at NYU’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies (www.scps.nyu.edu), NYU’s Media Talk presents public conversations with media leaders about trends in business from an industry insider’s viewpoint.
Over the course of 90 minutes, Tina Brown discusses her transition from print to internet, the advantages and disadvantages of online media vs. print, how and when online advertising will be incorporated on The Daily Beast, and ways newspapers can be relevant again.
On being in the magazine business today, Brown said:
“I do not know how I would do a monthly right now… We would be working on the May issue. The May issue? Who knows if we’ll all be here in May?”
On magazines posting content online, Brown said:
“Now, of course, [Magazines] just simply post it right up online, which to be honest is insane. I don’t think monthlies should post their stuff online. I really don’t… It’s nuts! Why would you do that?”
On the future of print, Brown said:
“It’s all going to move online. Print, I think, will become much more an elite thing. I don’t think for a minute that we’re going to lose print, nor should we, but I do think there will be a shaking out.”
