Hemlock Named Most Environmentally Progressive Printer in Canada for Fourth

Tuesday 24. February 2009 - Hemlock Printers Ltd. (Burnaby) was once again honoured for its commitment to the environment at the Annual Environmental Printing Awards, held February 12th, 2009 in Toronto, Ontario.

Hemlock President and CEO, Dick Kouwenhoven, was present at the awards ceremony to accept this prestigious honour. The event, hosted by PrintAction Magazine, and attended by over 350 paper and printing executives, recognizes excellence in environmental stewardship within the printing industry across Canada.

Highlights of Hemlock’s 2008 environmental achievements include:
• Completion of a Carbon Emission Inventory for calendar 2007, in accordance with the World Resource Institutes GHG Protocol
• Energy efficiency improvements resulting in a 33% annual savings in lighting energy, 10% overall
• Fountain solution ultra-filtration and recycling system resulting in decreased water use and reduced fountain solution wastewater by 90%
• Further reductions to landfill bound waste through improved recycling & composting programs resulting in an 80% reduction over 2 years
• Installation of waste paper, cardboard and plastic baler to increase revenue of recycled materials, streamline waste handling process and reduce collection truck visits to once per week
• Continued work with paper mills to identify source woodlands of paper fibre purchased by Hemlock in accordance with our Ancient Forest Friendly policy
