Nomacorc and Terracycle partner to further environmental sustainability
Monday 02. February 2009 - Nomacorc, the worlds leading producer of alternative wine closures, announced that it has joined forces with TerraCycle, the eco-friendly company that collects pre- and postconsumer material nationally and "upcycles" it into unique home, office, and school products sold at major North American retailers.
Through a joint program, Nomacorc closures collected by TerraCycle nationwide will be collected and upcycled into consumer products.
The products TerraCycle will develop from reprocessed Nomacorc closures will be recyclable and made via low energy consumption means. TerraCycle’s upcycled products are currently available in major national retailers including Wal-Mart, OfficeMax, The Home Depot, and Whole Foods. With the early success of TerraCycle’s wine closure recycling initiative, large independent beverage retail chains have expressed interest in joining the program.
Nomacorc already recycles all of the excess production materials created at its manufacturing facilities in the United States and Europe. The TerraCycle program will collect post-use Nomacorc closures from wineries, restaurants, and consumers.
“Finding a new purpose for used Nomacorc closures through TerraCycle’s established and well-respected national recycling program will help further our existing efforts to reduce Nomacorc’s environmental impact and carbon footprint,” said Malcolm Thompson, vice president of marketing and innovation.
To gather recyclable products, TerraCycle engages with non-profit community organizations, including schools, churches and youth groups. This approach enables TerraCycle to efficiently manage a robust, nationwide collection and recycling program. TerraCycle works with an independent non-profit, Zerofootprint, to offset all carbon emissions related to these programs.
Nomacorc will join other TerraCycle sponsors including Kraft, Frito Lay, and Stonyfield Farm whose support of the TerraCycle program provides a revenue source for worthy organizations in communities across the United States. Nationwide collection of Nomacorcs synthetic wine closures is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2009.
All Nomacorc products are 100% recyclable with LDPE food packaging.
