Butler Group deems Neptuny’s new major release of Caplan as “the future in capacity planning solutions”

Friday 05. December 2008 - Neptuny, a leading solution provider in performance optimization for IT, has recently released a new major release (3.0) of their product, named Caplan, providing Capacity Management solutions for large data centres and networks.

In reviewing their Technology Audit of this new version of Neptuny product, Butler Group deemed Caplan as “the future in capacity planning solutions”[1]. This view is also shared both by other major IT market analysts and by large enterprises which have already adopted Caplan.

In this latest Technology Audit, Butler Group analysts confirm their opinion that Caplan features provide  the necessary support for a mature, structured and ITIL-aligned Capacity Management process. Moreover, they recognize that Caplan’s ability to correlate IT with business metrics is crucial to enable organizations to realize the real value of their IT investments and to support IT rationalizing and optimization processes aligned to their company’s – actual and forecasted – business needs. In particular, Caplan’s ability to provide forecasts and what-if scenarios based on both infrastructure and business changes was considered by Butler Group analysts “an extremely useful addition to the normal capacity planning capability as organizations can understand the residual capacity, and therefore its potential risk, and the impact that any business change has on this resource, and by implication any risk.”[2]

Among the newest features provided by Caplan 3.0, Butler Group was favourably impressed by the ability to manage data center consolidation initiatives. Virtualization is a very important topic on the data centre management agenda. Roy Illsley, Senior Research Analyst at Butler Group comments: “Butler Group considers the relentless shift towards the fully virtualized data centre as a certainty in the next five years; however, the challenge of planning and managing in this new data centre environment requires a different approach and tools designed especially for this dynamic environment.”[3] In this regard. Caplan enables IT managers to safely perform consolidation and virtualization initiatives as it allow them to identify systems to be consolidated, to simulate both physical consolidation and virtualization scenarios and to evaluate how to reduce risks involved in overloading the virtualized infrastructure. Caplan 3.0 supports several virtualization technologies (including those provided by VMware and other major UNIX vendors) thus keeping the promise to

provide Capacity Management for heterogeneous data centres, to gather performance data from wide range of management platforms and to integrate other ITSM tools.

Giuseppe Nardiello, Neptuny’s Business Development Manager, commented the new Technology Audit, saying: “We are very pleased that Butler Group considers the Caplan business-aware approach to Capacity Management as enabling Neptuny to be well positioned in a market that according to their analysts will experience significant growth in the coming years.”
