Showcasing new talent in the beauty market

Friday 10. October 2008 - The official Beauty Challenger Awards 2008 ceremony, organised by Beyond Beauty Paris, took place on Monday 6th October 2008 in the Paris Villepinte Amphitheatre.

Four prizes were awarded this year:
Cosmeeting first prize: Erborian
Spa & Institut first prize: Jewels Beauty
Pharmameeting first prize: Need
And the special jury “coup de coeur” prize: Ainy

Focus on a highly-coveted competition
Offering the key to success for upcoming brands, the Beauty Challenger Awards are the only awards of their kind in the world and are eagerly awaited by beauty industry professionals.

The 2008 competition attracted 52 creative and innovative brands from a large number of countries including Germany, Africa, UK, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Japan, USA and New Zealand.

This annual competition is open to all emerging national and international brands that meet the following criteria:
• Must seek selective or alternative distribution.
• Must present a distinctive, creative and innovative concept.
• Must not be part of a group.
• Must have been launched recently (trading for under five years).

An international jury
An international jury* made up of 40 experts from the world of selective distribution, the industry and general press selected four winners who were rewarded for their creativity and the coherence of their marketing mix.

The jury used specific evaluation criteria: innovation / distinctiveness – concept coherence – communications quality – texture and scents (poly-sensoriality) – aesthetics and practicality (packaging).

Last year’s competition rewarded Erborian, which came third in the ranking, as well as YESforLOV (winner of the Beauty Challenger Awards 2007 first prize), Juliette Has a Gun and Officina, with all three proving very popular with buyers from selective distributors and the press.

A showcase for talent and a great launch pad for young niche brands, every year this prestigious award contributes to the reputation for excellence held by Beyond Beauty Paris, the European event with a 360° view of the beauty and wellness industries, and attracts the attention of the biggest national and international distributors.

The next Beauty Challenger Awards will be held in 2009!

*COSMEETING first prize:
ERBORIAN: gentle skin therapy
Erborian (Herbs from the Orient) is the first line of skincare products to offer the best of Korean herbal treatments in luxurious, high-tech and delightful textures. A specialist laboratory in Seoul has created two unique blends of medicinal plants, selected for their beneficial effect on the skin, for Erborian: toning herbs that stimulate microcirculation and slow down ageing.Toning and anti-fatigue, Erborian creams naturally stimulate the skin’s hyaluronic acid and make it look young, full of energy and bursting with health. The exclusive formulas are developed in the Korean laboratory with textures being both ultra-fine and creamy making them the equal of any top-end skincare brand.
At Beyond Beauty Paris 2008, Erborian is presenting the first ginseng high dose serum patented formula, which is an ultra-soft yet strong nano-emulsion offering the best of Korean medicinal herbs making for a smooth skin and an unrivalled antioxidant effect.

*SPA & INSTITUT first prize
Jewels Beauty presents the Raku massage sandals
Wearing tight shoes and high heels causes the muscles in the arch of the foot – which supports the body’s weight – to collapse. This can cause deformations such as bunions. Calf muscle tension and swelling is the result of non muscular toes. Daily exercises or moving the toes using the Raku massage sandals, which were specially designed by a Japanese doctor and are patented, are key to preventing or curing these problems. Having strong toes enables a balance to be maintained between the leg, angle, knee and hip joints. In addition, the germanium fibre contained in the sandals helps to improve circulation and to be generally healthy.

And the SlimCera Beauty Roller
The SlimCera, patented with five rollers, replaces the hands of a beautician, stimulating the facial muscles and revitalising the skin. The roller helps to eliminate impurities and clean the skin’s pores.A roller massage is a gentle and pleasant experience and should be carried out for three minutes three times a day.No electrical appliances, liquids or gels are needed – just roll the roller over the skin. Simple and easy to use on the face and the body.

*PHARMAMEETING first prize:
Need or “gourmet health”
Need springs from the idea of creating products that are healthy, taste nice and do not need any preparation, nor a glass of water, and which can be eaten at any time and in any place. In two words, these are “health sweets”.
The brightly coloured aluminium tubes, easy to find in a handbag or a glove compartment, contain 22 sugar-free sweets made from gum arabic, plant ingredients, essential oils and natural colorants. The level of ingredients established by a recognised plant and pharmacy specialist justifies limiting consumption to three or four per day.The range now boasts six varieties:skin beauty, antioxidant, digestion, figure, toning and anti-stress and is set to expand rapidly. Launched in France, the Need sweets are distributed in Belgium, Denmark and Luxembourg.

*The special jury “COUP DE COEUR”
AINY,sacred plant based products
Sacred plants are used by the peoples of the Andes and Amazonia in ancestral protection and healing rituals. They are known by ethno-pharmacologists to have an intense biological activity. Ainy identifies these plants with the help of local populations and shamans. The company draws its inspiration from their remarkable universe to develop products with a magical feel and scent. Ainy reveals the effectiveness of the sacred plants in its laboratory with the help of pharmacists, chemists and biologists and develops alternatives to biopiracy. The company respects the producers and has a fair trade ethos.Ainy also respects nature by developing organic products (Ecocert certification) which are not tested on animals (One Voice certification).
