SGIA Canal Street Initiative Wins National Award

Friday 01. August 2008 - Member-volunteer effort beautified streetscapes in New Orleans

SGIA’s community-building efforts in New Orleans, the SGIA Canal Street Initiative, have received national recognition for improving the American way of life.
The American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) and The Center for Association Leadership, Washington-based organizations for the association industry, added the SGIA Canal Street Initiative to the Honor Roll list of the 2008 Associations Advance America (AAA) program.
In its 18th year, the AAA Awards recognize associations and industry groups that improve the quality of life in America with innovative programs in education, skills training, standard setting, business and social innovation, knowledge creation, citizenship and community service. “Activities such as yours truly make America a better place to live,” said ASAE President and CEO John H. Graham IV, CAE.
SGIA’s entirely volunteer initiative, which installed more than 100 large-format graphic panels over boarded-up storefronts along Canal Street in New Orleans, was one of 12 programs selected for the ASAE recognition.
“This award is a great validation of the labor, time, services and materials that 40 SGIA member companies provided to make the Canal Street Initiative a reality,” said SGIA President/CEO Michael Robertson. “Their work showed New Orleans and the rest of the country how wide-format imaging can enhance urban environments and the quality of life there.”
