Innovations for Higher Pharma Safety and Security

Friday 02. May 2008 - At Interpack 2008, three divisions of Schreiner Group based in Oberschleissheim near Munich—MediPharm, ProSecure and LogiData—demonstrate how innovation leads to better solutions in packaging technology.

The experts from Schreiner MediPharm develop self-adhesive marking and functional labels specifically for the pharmaceutical industry. The wealth of professional and market know-how available at Schreiner MediPharm, combined with the special expertise of the Group’s other divisions, spawns innovative developments and joint projects that set new standards.

Needle-Trap–A Cost-Effective Needle Protection System for Prefilled Syringes
An example of a recent development, which has already won an award by FINAT, the international label manufacturers’ and converters’ association, is Schreiner MediPharm’s Needle-Trap system. The syringe label with an integrated needle protection functionality helps to close one of the major safety gaps in day-to-day healthcare practice. According to expert estimates, approximately 500,000 accidental needlestick injuries occur just in Germany every year. Such injuries harbor the risk of infection with hepatitis or HIV, for example. However, as conventional needle protection systems are comparatively costly, they are generally used only for special pharmaceuticals. Therefore, Schreiner MediPharm has developed Needle-Trap as a cost-effective alternative, which helps to protect healthcare workers from needlestick injuries. The self-adhesive, special label can be applied to the syringes on conventional labeling lines. Changes to packaging or the labeling process are not required. The Needle-Trap system has a safety mechanism allowing the needle to be secured after it has been contaminated with blood. Needle-Trap meets the stringent requirements of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and has been awarded 510(k) certification. The simplicity and ingeniousness of the solution benefits both, pharmaceutical manufacturers and healthcare workers.

SecuMed2—A Double Dose of Drug Safety
Fake drugs expose patients and pharmaceutical manufacturers to serious risks. The growing incidence of pharmaceutical product piracy and drug tampering in recent years has magnified the risks to human health as well as the business of pharmaceutical manufacturers. Together with the security experts from Schreiner ProSecure, Schreiner MediPharm has developed an innovative syringe label as part of its Pharma-Comb range to address this problem. SecuMed2 provides particularly effective protection against counterfeiting and tampering due to its multi-step system, consisting of overt and covert authenticity features. The interaction between them facilitates the authentication of the product by the patient, physician or pharmacist. SecuMed2 protects the health of patients—and pharmaceutical manufacturers from damage to their image as well as unjustified product liability claims. This protection has long-term value: SecuMed2 has two detachable documentation labels with authenticity features. These can be applied to the patient’s medical records to provide permanent proof of the authenticity and origin of the drug which has been adminstered to the patient.
