Sappi Europe Advances Sustainability of Magno Web Production at Kirkniemi Mill

Friday 07. November 2025 - Sappi Europe has placed its Magno Web paper range at the centre of its sustainability progress, with production now fully established at the Kirkniemi Mill in Lohja, Finland. Leveraging major investments in renewable energy and clean electricity,

Magno Web benefits from Kirkniemi’s decarbonised operations without compromise on quality or performance, and represents a 58% reduction in carbon footprint compared to its previous production location.
Magno Web is a high-quality coated paper range trusted in sectors like publishing, advertising, and premium print applications, valued for its consistent image reproduction, balanced brightness and opacity, and choice of gloss or silk finishes that meet customer demands for both performance and versatility.
In 2023, Kirkniemi Mill successfully transitioned to renewable biomass energy, cutting Scope 1 (direct) emissions from its operations by 90%. With clean electricity now supplying the site, Scope 2 (indirect) emissions have also been eliminated, making Kirkniemi a benchmark in sustainable paper production.
These investments also support customers’ efforts to decrease their own carbon footprint, with direct impact on the reduction of their Scope 3 emissions, indirect emissions related to the purchase of goods and services.
Kirkniemi Mill’s transformation is among nearly 80 projects outlined in Sappi Europe’s 2020-2025 decarbonisation roadmap, which contribute significantly to Sappi’s 2030 science-based targets.
“Sappi Europe’s decarbonisation journey underwent a massive acceleration from 2020 onwards. We’re proud to have greatly surpassed our 2025 targets for CO2 emission reductions, despite challenging economic conditions,” says Sarah Price, Sappi Europe’s Director of Sustainability. “For us, this is much broader than emissions; it’s about investing now for long-term positive change and enabling our customers to do the same.”
While the Galerie paper range first demonstrated the impact of Sappi’s decarbonisation efforts, achieving a 70% reduction in CO2 emissions by the end of 2024, the expansion of these benefits to Magno Web underscores Kirkniemi’s role as a high-tech, sustainable hub for coated and uncoated paper production. Additionally, both Magno Web and Galerie paper ranges are available upon request as PEFC certified (PEFC/07-32-76) or FSC certified (FSC-C015022).
These remarkable achievements align with global climate goals and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 13 on climate action, contributing to Sappi’s commitment to reduce combined Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 41.5% by 2030 (from 2019).
