Terphane Invests in Fourth BOBST Metallizer to Increase Production of High Barrier Film

Tuesday 29. June 2021 - Terphane based in Brazil has purchased their fourth metallizer from BOBST; the BOBST EXPERT K5 2450 is equipped with AlOx, AluBond and DarkNight and will be installed at the beginning of 2022. The new machine follows the installation last year of an identical machine.

Established in 1976, Terphane is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year and is going from strength to strength. As the leader in BOPET film in Latin America, the company supplies customers globally with a production capacity of 65 thousand tonnes per year. Terphane is committed to sustainability and has developed a range of films named Ecophane which are all recyclable and have been designed specifically to work towards the circular economy.
The purchase of another BOBST EXPERT K5 is proof of Terphane’s commitment to further increase their production of opaque and clear films with high barrier and high adhesion to meet the requirements of their customers.
Production of Opaque and Transparent High Barrier Films
The unique BOBST processes installed on the BOBST EXPERT K5 allow for production of a variety of films to meet market demands. The DarkNight process is designed to achieve high barrier metallized films at a lower cost due to the fact that it eliminates the need to use high Optical Density levels which is usually required for high barrier applications. An enhanced barrier performance is achieved by reducing defects during the metallization process. Working in conjunction with BOBST Hawkeye, the process provides a new approach to defect reduction and is a major step forward in the journey towards full aluminium foil replacement with high barrier metallized films. For films where a high adhesion level is required, BOBST AluBond can be used to produce films with a high bonding strength eliminating the need for chemically treated films. In addition, AluBond significantly increases dyne level retention giving improved ink wettability during printing and enhancing structure stability during lamination.
The BOBST AlOx process which has been established in the market for nearly 15 years allows production of high barrier, transparent films which is also recyclable. Commenting on the investment, José Bosco Silveira Jr, President of Terphane said, “We have had a long relationship with BOBST of over 20 years and are happy to add another of their machines to our factory. The BOBST EXPERT K5 which was installed a year ago has enabled us to increase our production of high barrier films but due to increased demand from our customers, we needed to further increase our capacity and it was a natural choice to purchase a second metallizer with the same processes. We look forward to it being installed next year”
