Metsä Board: Eero Aarnio designs eco-playhouse in corrugated board

Wednesday 02. September 2020 - The artist Eero Aarnio, who achieved worldwide fame through his furniture design creations - such as the legendary Ball Chair armchair - has designed an eco-playhouse made of corrugated cardboard. Aarnio has always been interested in different materials and the possibilities they offer. Corrugated cardboard fascinates him especially because of its light weight and environmental friendliness.

Thanks to its design and lightweight cardboard construction, the playhouse can be easily assembled and disassembled at different locations. It can be used indoors or, if the weather is suitable, also outdoors. &bdquoPeople spend more time at home with the family during this extraordinary time. Building a playhouse is a great community activity and fun for the whole family”, explains Eero Aarnio. &bdquoIn the past, my children also liked building houses from empty cardboard boxes,” he remembers.
The sustainable white kraftliner used in this playhouse comes from Metsä Board, a leading European producer of premium fresh fibre board and a member of the Metsä Group. MetsäBoard Pro WKL 160 g/m2 was chosen for the exterior ceiling as this quality is particularly smooth and produces outstanding print results. The interior ceiling is MetsäBoard Natural WKL Bright 160 g/m2. A B-flute was used as kraftliner for the corrugated sheeting.
Screen printing gives the surface an even, attractive colour tone. MetsäBoard Pro WKL is characterised by fast drying of the printing ink. The quality is ideal for this project because of its excellent printing properties and high production efficiency,” comments Ilkka Harju, Packaging Services Director EMEA & APAC at Metsä Board.
The playhouse is manufactured by two Finnish companies, Futupack and Capertum.
