Asian Woodchip Imports Reached All-Time Record Volume in 2013

Friday 09. May 2014 - Vietnam remains dominant hardwood supplier to Asian-Pacific region, with likely competition from Australia in near-term

Woodchip imports in the Asia-Pacific region again reached a new, all time record volume of 21.5 million BDMT during 2013. Vietnam accounted for a large portion of this import volume, further extending its lead in hardwood chip supply to the region. These findings and more were released today in the 2014 International Pulpwood Trade Review by RISI, the leading information provider for the global forest products industry.
“Vietnam surpassed Australia as the top hardwood supplier to the Asian-Pacific market in 2011 and has since been expanding. Over the last year, Vietnamese woodchip exports made up a dominant 38% of all volume traded in the region,” said Robert Flynn Director of International Timber at RISI and co-author of the annual report.
“However, Vietnam could soon face stiff competition for exports. Although woodchip exports from Australia have been in decline, a combination of factors reversed this trend in late 2013. We anticipate a major recovery in Australian volume in 2014,” continued Flynn.
The 2014 International Pulpwood Trade Review offered as part of the International Pulpwood Trade Service, has long been the standard measure for those in the international trade of woodchips, pulp logs and biomass fiber. This annual report examines the markets for globally traded pulpwood fiber and the pulpwood resources for domestic and export supply in more than 35 countries.
