Double digit growth in Russian recycled containerboard production

Thursday 28. November 2013 - Russia achieves higher profits compared with Western European market after increasing its usage of recycled containerboard over the last 4 years.

Despite a limited supply of recovered paper in Russia, recycled containerboard production is outpacing virgin containerboard production. Over the last 3 years recycled containerboard production grew 11.3% each year, while production of virgin containerboard grew 3.7%. These findings were published today in a new study by RISI, the leading information provider for the global forest products industry.
“Double-digit production growth has resulted in Russian domestic Testliner 2 prices reaching 1.7 times their variable costs in the 2010-2012 period. This is much higher than the 1.25 ratio experienced by the Western European recycled containerboard industry,” said Orifjon Abidov, Senior Economist, Packaging Papers at RISI.
