Momentive Specialty Chemicals Inc. to Address the Use of Life Cycle Analysis for Validating Sustainability at the European Coatings Show 2013
Friday 22. March 2013 - Talk accompanies launch of new polyester powder coating binder for low thermal cure and super durability
Momentive Specialty Chemicals Inc. (“MSC” or the “Company”) will present a paper on using Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) to validate the sustainability of new polyester powder coating binders for low thermal cure and super durability at the 2013 European Coatings Show. LCA is a methodology for analyzing the environmental performance of potential new products and was used in the development of Albecor 6190 polyester powder coating, MSC’s newest energy-saving powder coating resin.
In response to market demand for advanced and environmentally suitable technologies, MSC designed its Albecor line of powder coating resins expressly for sustainably manufactured products. In 2011, in collaboration with the university Politecnico di Torino, Italy, the Company used LCA to study low temperature cure (LTC) powder resins. It was found that using the Albecor LTC system significantly decreased the energy consumed during application. The next step was to conduct a new LCA to calculate the impact of a new product with extended durabilitysuper durable Albecor 6190 polyester powder coating in combination with the previously identified benefits of LTC coatings.
“It’s very gratifying to have successfully validated the energy savings our Albecor LTC line can deliver,” said Donato Di Lorenzo, Marketing & Business Development Manager, Powder Resins. “We’re also very excited about our newest product in this line, Albecor 6190 polyester powder coating, which exhibits extreme outdoor durability, very good mechanical properties, and excellent flow, while being blooming free and conveying good coating storage stability. It cures in 15 minutes at 160°C (object temperature).”
The innovative Albecor LTC technology platform comprises super durable polyester resins which can be thermally cured in shorter and/or lower-temperature cycles than conventional stoving requires. The platform complies with Qualicoat Class 2 and GSB (Qualitätsgemeinschaft für die Stückbeschichtung von Bauteilen) Master Class requirements, performing well in challenging applications such as Architectural, Civil Engineering, Transportation, Earth Moving and Heavy Duty. These new resins’ low temperature curing capabilities, combined with the extended life spans of finished coatings formulated with these resins, enable carbon footprint reduction.
