swissQprint runs tandem

Friday 02. November 2012 - swissQprint introduced the 3.2 metre wide inkjet system named Nyala at the Drupa 2012. A new, efficiency-boosting print mode is now available for the high-performance machine: the tandem function keeps the machine running non-stop and makes waiting times a thing of the past.

When swissQprint introduced the high-performance Nyala it struck a chord with many companies looking for both high productivity and versatility. Its printing table is 3.2 metres wide and has an output capacity of 140 m2/h or 200 m2/h if the print heads are equipped fourfold with CMYK. The first machine was sold directly at the Drupa exhibition booth. A further 15 machines have been or soon will be delivered to their respective buyers.
The new tandem function for Nyala will be of interest to anyone wanting to achieve the greatest possible output for serial production. The principle is straightforward: the print table is loaded as usual from the front and the print job is started. Whilst the machine processes the first job, the operator starts to load the rear half of the table. The printing beam moves to the rear and continues the printing process as soon as the front job is finished and the operator confirms that the rear job is ready to start. The operator meanwhile removes the finished prints from the front area and prepares the next substrates for printing. And so production continues until the series is finished. The machine works non-stop without interruption. Greater efficiency is virtually inconceivable.
The technology behind the application
Practically-minded people will ask themselves how the vacuum manages to cope. The answer is simple: Nyala’s printing table is divided into two vacuum zones. The front zone is active when a print job is running at the front; the same applies to the rear zone. Of course, both halves can also work simultaneously. The printing system can be used as before for large-format panels of up to 3.2 x 4 metres. Besides, it is suitable for roll stock as well.
The new tandem function is designed for large series of smaller substrates. The print images can be identical or different. One conceivable use is the personalisation of direct marketing media produced using an offset process.
Significantly more output
A practical test carried out by a user delivered the following results: the production of 1,000 panels (format: 400 x 400 mm) had previously taken 7 hours and 40 minutes. With the machine working in tandem mode, the operator was able to start processing a new job after 4 hours and 50 minutes. That equates to a time saving of around 37%.
Tandem keeps the machine and the operator moving all the time. The new function is therefore not only an output booster but also a keep-fit programme for personnel. Tandem operation comes as standard with the Nyala model from swissQprint. It will be available as an option for the Oryx and Impala models as of January 2013
