The Sun Herald Automates Content Workflow with ProImage NewsWay as more newspapers automate to reduce production costs

Tuesday 01. September 2009 - ProImage has today announced that The Sun Herald, a McClatchy Company owned property, published by Gulf Publishing Company in Biloxi, Mississippi, is benefitting from a suite of software solutions that is automating production and reducing costs for hundreds of newspapers and newspaper printers around the world.

It recently implemented ProImage NewsWay, initially to manage workflow from pre-press to two Agfa 3850 filmsetters. Recently however, the filmsetters were replaced by Screen CTP equipment, and through NewsWay output production has seamlessly transferred to CTP – right through to the press controls.

Ink Savings
The Sun Herald has also installed ProImage OnColor ECO ink optimization software. This automatically analyzes PDF files and intelligently applies gray component replacement (GCR) to reduce the use of cyan, magenta and yellow ink, replacing it with black. This typically saves an average 15%-25% of colored ink, as well as improves print quality.

Ink preset data is then sent by NewsWay, in real-time, to The Sun Herald’s Goss MPSCII press control system. The software automatically calculates optimum ink coverage, by column, for each page and forwards the computed results to the press control system, thus saving time and money whilst reducing the newspaper’s carbon footprint.

The NewsWay software includes edition planning; tabloid and broadsheet imposition; low-resolution views for soft proofing and reading of page pairs; and the burning of furniture and text on plates. In addition, through a browser, NewsWay enables plate approvals, version tracking, job scheduling, conferencing and automated event notification, all significantly improving The Sun Herald’s production efficiency.

Furthermore, ProImage has provided integration with OneVision’s Asura in order to read error logs in the NewsWay browser, while NewsWay also sends files to an electronic archive and eTearsheets system, thus providing a single end-to-end automated pre-press workflow solution.
