Students learn to paint at the facility in Augsburg

Painting in the manroland assembly hall: the students from Augsburg University working on the practical part of their art seminar.

Monday 13. July 2009 - manroland as an artists’ colony

For students studying engineering and economics, for example, manroland has always been a popular choice. But under the aegis of the local educational alliance between manroland and Augsburg University, the synergies have taken on a new and exciting twist with a seminar called “Painting in an Industrial Environment”.

Tuesdays are rather special days at manroland in Augsburg. Because this is when about ten young ladies are seen strolling over the courtyard: incongruous enough for a mechanical engineering plant, indeed, but they’re also laden with easels and tubes of paint. They are all in fact studying art pedagogics at Augsburg University, and in the summer semester of 2009 are taking a seminar called “Painting in an Industrial Environment”, the brainchild of Urs Freund.

Paintbrush cognoscenti meet screw-wrench virtuosos
manroland’s plant premises certainly offer a picturesque summertime ambiance for painters. Next to the ultra-modern headquarters, still under construction, are the imposingly history-steeped plant buildings. Which the students capture on canvas in the open air – industrial culture in the truest sense of the word. Other students, like Angela Hauschild (30), feel quite at home in the workshop atmosphere of the assembly hall. It’s impressive to see how skillfully the young artists conjure printing units taking shape in the assembly hall onto the waiting canvas. What are the salient features of painting in an industrial environment? To quote the aspiring art teacher Angela Hauschild: “The roomy atmosphere in the halls and the range of visual stimuli make it a treasure trove for artists. My favorite motif so far is definitely the gearwheels with the aesthetic appeal of their shape/material combinations.” Gratifying to see how the seminar unearths hitherto undreamed-of enthusiasm.
