Rutschi AG Wins 2009 FESPA Digital Print Awards Vehicle Category

Specialist screen and digital printer, Rutschi AG, based in Zurich, Switzerland, has been named the Vehicle Category winner in the FESPA Digital Print Awards 2009, supported by HP.

Wednesday 17. June 2009 - Specialist screen and digital printer, Rutschi AG, based in Zurich, Switzerland, has been named the Vehicle Category winner in the FESPA Digital Print Awards 2009, supported by HP.

One of the most popular award categories, the Vehicle Category received a high number of entries from all over Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Rutschi AG triumphed over the competition with its eye-catching ‘Night Trains’ vehicle wrap produced for client ZVV Zürcher Verkehrsverbund. Used before, during and after the 2008 UEFA European Football Championship, the wrap featured changeable text with ‘night’ as the overall theme of the project.

The main challenge of the project was the quick turnaround necessary. Printed using the Mutoh Spitfire Extreme and the Roland Soljet Pro VII, the 2000m2 wrap needed to be a high quality print (resolution of 720 x 720 dpi) and turned around within six days, which included printing and mounting the wrap onto two trains of 26-metre wagons.

Eugenio Meccariello, Digital Print Product Manager for Rutschi AG comments: “Our team was pushed to the limit with this project, as the timeframe meant there was very little margin for error. We only had one attempt to fit the graphics on and around the windows and doors – a difficult task given the length of the trains. This was further complicated by the special effects created on the doors, which illustrated two bats kissing when the doors opened on one carriage and a bat eating a fly on another carriage when the doors opened.”

Eugenio Meccariello concludes: “As far as we are aware, there is no other train in Switzerland that has ever been fully wrapped and we are thrilled to receive industry recognition by winning a coveted FESPA Digital Print Award.”

Kurt Rutschi, CEO Rutschi AG, celebrated with other Category Winners at an exclusive dinner event in Amsterdam on 11th May, where he received his prize certificate from FESPA jury member Michael Seidl, publisher of the central and eastern European Print & Publishing media group.

Commenting on Rutschi AG’s success, Nigel Steffens, FESPA CEO, said:
“The Vehicle Category has always been one of the most popular categories of the Awards. With so many outstanding entries, the jury had a difficult task to select a winner, but Rutschi AG’s inspirational and original special effects really made the project stand out from the competition. We look forward to seeing more forward-thinking creations from Rutschi AG and hope that the Swiss company’s work has inspired other printers to push creative limits and see that even with the most challenging brief, anything is possible.”
