Swiss Printer Wins Vehicle Category at 2009 FESPA Digital Print Awards

Swiss printers impressed judges at this year’s FESPA Digital Print Awards, winning the Vehicle Category and taking second place in the Packaging & Manufactured Goods Category.

Friday 12. June 2009 - Swiss printers impressed judges at this year’s FESPA Digital Print Awards, winning the Vehicle Category and taking second place in the Packaging & Manufactured Goods Category.

The competition was open to printers from across Europe, the Middle East and Africa and attracted more than 200 entries, which were evaluated by an independent jury. The winners were announced on the eve of the FESPA Digital 2009 exhibition (12 -14 May 2009) in Amsterdam. One winner and one runner-up were selected in each of the six categories, and an additional 11 entries were commended by the jury.

Zurich-based Rutschi AG triumphed in the Vehicle Category, beating the competition with its Night Trains project for ZVV Zürcher Verkehrverbund. Used before, during and after the 2008 UEFA European Football Championship, the wrap featured changeable text with ‘night’ as the overall theme of the project. The main challenge of the project was the quick turnaround necessary. Printed using the Mutoh Spitfire Extreme and the Roland Soljet Pro VII, the 2000m2 wrap needed to be a high quality print (resolution of 720 x 720 dpi) and turned around within six days, which included printing and mounting the wrap onto two trains of 26-metre wagons.

PlotFactory AG from Weisslingen was runner-up in the Packaging & Manufactured Goods Category with its Gamebox entry produced for client Baldelli’s Catering. Printed using the d.gen 740 TX textile printer, the Gamebox, featuring two games in one – draughts and chess – was created as an exclusive present for the catering company’s VIP customers. Each folding Gamebox is produced using a combination of different materials, including fabric, acrylic and neodyne magnets. The double-sided fabric, painted with game symbols and the game board, is moulded in acrylic.

Commenting on the Swiss printers’ success, Nigel Steffens, FESPA CEO, said: “We are extremely pleased with the response that we’ve had from Swiss printers at this year’s FESPA Digital Print Awards. As a peripatetic show, FESPA Digital 2008, held in Geneva, enabled us to reach new audiences, including many Swiss printers that we met for the first time. It’s great to see these examples of Swiss printers producing such high quality, creative solutions for their customers. We look forward to seeing this trend continue at the next FESPA Digital Print Awards.”
